The DPhil entails the writing <strong>of</strong> a thesis <strong>of</strong>up to 100,000 words which may involve either the finding <strong>of</strong> newor re-examination <strong>of</strong> known sources.The MLitt involves writing a thesis <strong>of</strong> up to 50,000 words whichis usually based on original sources, printed or manuscript. Furtherdetails <strong>of</strong> these programmes are available from:www.history.ox.ac.uk/postgrad/pg_sect_b2_new.htmDuring the first one or two years candidates for either degreepursue a mixed course <strong>of</strong> skills training (palaeography, statisticsetc. as appropriate), seminars and paper writing, while preparing adetailed outline <strong>of</strong> their thesis under the guidance <strong>of</strong> a supervisor.They may be required to attend certain classes provided for thevarious taught graduate programmes described below.ϐϐTaught ProgrammesThe Master’s programmes <strong>of</strong>fered by the History Faculty providean entry route into <strong>Oxford</strong> research degrees, but may als<strong>of</strong>unction as free-standing programmes <strong>of</strong> study. They provide agrounding in research methods in some given field <strong>of</strong> historicalknowledge. Taught programmes last for 9, 11 and 12 months (forMSts, MScs) and 21 months (for MPhils). Students completingthe substantial dissertation required for an MPhil may develop thisinto a DPhil thesis by extending their primary research base in anadditional one or two years.MSt in Medieval HistoryThis programme provides the normal entry route to researchdegrees for all medieval historians not already holding relevantMaster’s degrees, or seeking qualification through a specialistprogramme such as the MSt or MPhil n Late Antique andByzantine <strong>Studies</strong>. It balances taught classes, language trainingand independent research. <strong>Oxford</strong>’s strength in medieval historymeans that almost any area <strong>of</strong> medieval European history canbe studied. Language training is available in Latin, most modernlanguages, medieval languages (including Celtic, Romance andGermanic languages), and Greek.The taught classes consist <strong>of</strong> a core course in the first termfocusing on historical methods, and a choice <strong>of</strong> optional subjectsin the second term, with a chronological spread across the MiddleAges. Applicants may opt for one <strong>of</strong> three streams: thesefocus on either the post-1500 history <strong>of</strong> Britain and Europe, orthe history <strong>of</strong> the United States <strong>of</strong> America, or global history(students may focus on commonwealth and imperial, SouthAsian, or East Asian history).
