Through the work <strong>of</strong> theDepartment for Continuing Education, <strong>Oxford</strong> is recognisedinternationally as a leading provider <strong>of</strong> opportunities forextended learning for purposes <strong>of</strong> pr<strong>of</strong>essional and personaldevelopment. The Department can draw on over 100 years’experience <strong>of</strong> providing high-quality, flexible, part-timeeducation specifically tailored for adults, complementingthe work <strong>of</strong> the <strong>University</strong> in full-time education. We <strong>of</strong>feropportunities ranging from open-access weekend schoolsto part-time postgraduate taught and research degrees.Increasing numbers <strong>of</strong> courses are available online.Our courses recruit adult students <strong>of</strong> all ages regionally,nationally and internationally. In 2008–09, the Departmentfor Continuing Education enrolled over 15,000 students andhad approximately 50 award-bearing programmes, includingundergraduate and postgraduate certificates and diplomas,as well as part-time taught Master’s degrees and doctoralprogrammes (DPhils). Many <strong>of</strong> the courses are <strong>of</strong>feredin conjunction with other departments <strong>of</strong> the <strong>University</strong>.Subjects on <strong>of</strong>fer span the Arts, Sciences and SocialSciences, encompassing, for example, English Local History,Creative Writing, Archaeology, Bioinformatics, S<strong>of</strong>twareEngineering, Experimental Therapeutics, Cognitive Therapy,and International Human Rights Law.www.conted.ox.ac.uk138
