Teaching is providedjointly by members <strong>of</strong> the Theology and Philosophy Faculties.The degree is awarded on an examination and a short thesis.|| Length <strong>of</strong> programme: Two yearsMPhil in Eastern Christian <strong>Studies</strong>This course provides graduates in Oriental <strong>Studies</strong> or Theologywith the opportunity to study the main creative period <strong>of</strong> theEastern Christian tradition with a more detailed study <strong>of</strong> textsin Greek, Armenian or Syriac. Teaching is provided jointly bymembers <strong>of</strong> the Faculties <strong>of</strong> Oriental <strong>Studies</strong> and Theology, butteaching in all three options may not be available every year. Aknowledge <strong>of</strong> Greek is required.The aims <strong>of</strong> this programme are to develop the practice <strong>of</strong>analytical enquiry into Eastern traditions <strong>of</strong> Christianity; toenable students to acquire knowledge and understanding <strong>of</strong>foundational material and current developments in the area; todevelop the ability to identify, understand and apply key conceptsand principles; to enable students to reflect on relevant issues <strong>of</strong>method; to enable students to gain a critical knowledge <strong>of</strong> thescholarly literature relevant to their course.|| Length <strong>of</strong> programme: Two yearsMPhil in Judaism and Christianity in the Graeco-Roman WorldThis course, for which teaching is provided by members <strong>of</strong> theOriental <strong>Studies</strong> and Theology Faculties, pays equal attention tothe two religious traditions. The subjects available in that part <strong>of</strong>the course concerned with Judaism are: Jewish literature, history,and institutions from 200 BC to AD 200, Jewish historiography,Bible interpretation, eschatology, and wisdom literature; and inthat concerning Christianity: Christian literature, history, andinstitutions to AD 180, the Gospels and the historical Jesus,the Acts and the Pauline corpus, the Apostolic Fathers, and theApologists. A knowledge <strong>of</strong> Greek and Hebrew is required, anda wide range <strong>of</strong> primary literature must be covered. Two papersand a short thesis are required in one <strong>of</strong> the two traditions, threepapers in the other.|| Length <strong>of</strong> programme: Two yearsMSt in TheologyThe MSt is designed to <strong>of</strong>fer a specialist postgraduate educationin Theology. Students specialise in one <strong>of</strong> the following areas:Old Testament, New Testament, Science and Religion, ChristianDoctrine, Ecclesiastical History, Christian Ethics, BiblicalInterpretation. This will include an element <strong>of</strong> scholarly researchand writing, which can constitute part <strong>of</strong> the training for a futureresearch degree. It is common for students aiming to study fora doctorate at <strong>Oxford</strong> to begin with the MSt unless they alreadyhave an equivalent qualification. Students initially registered forthe MSt may, if their work is <strong>of</strong> a sufficiently high quality, beallowed to transfer to the corresponding two year MPhil. Thedegree is awarded on the basis <strong>of</strong> several short essays and adissertation <strong>of</strong> up to 15,000 words. In some subjects there is alsoa written examination. Most courses will require knowledge <strong>of</strong> alanguage other than English.|| Length <strong>of</strong> programme: One yearMSt in Philosophical TheologyThis course, which covers part <strong>of</strong> the ground covered by theMPhil in Philosophical Theology, provides an opportunity foradvanced work in Philosophical Theology within the limits <strong>of</strong> whatcan be done in a single year.|| Length <strong>of</strong> programme: One yearMSt in Study <strong>of</strong> ReligionThis course is intended to provide a research introduction to thestudy <strong>of</strong> religions, and teaching is <strong>of</strong>ten provided by members <strong>of</strong>the Centre for Hindu, Buddhist, Islamic and Hebrew <strong>Studies</strong>. Itconsists <strong>of</strong> three papers, one on the Nature <strong>of</strong> Religion and twoon practices texts and doctrines selected from one <strong>of</strong>: Judaism,Islam, Christianity, Hinduism, or Buddhism.|| Length <strong>of</strong> programme: One yearMTh in Applied TheologyThis course is designed to enable theological reflection uponexperience in pastoral practice, mainly but not only, in the context<strong>of</strong> ministry in the Church. It may be taken by those who hold apastoral appointment at present, or by students who can includea period <strong>of</strong> approved pastoral experience in their course <strong>of</strong> studyfor the MTh. Candidates must have a degree in theology, or holdan equivalent theological qualification. The degree is awardedon the successful completion <strong>of</strong> five extended essays relating totaught courses, an extended ‘essay on an experiential project’, anda thesis <strong>of</strong> up to 25,000 words. The colleges, Permanent PrivateHalls or theological colleges which are <strong>of</strong>fering this course <strong>of</strong>study are: Campion Hall, Mansfield College, Regent’s Park College,Ripon College Cuddesdon, St Benet’s Hall, St Stephen’s House,Wycliffe Hall. Although this degree is under the Board <strong>of</strong> theFaculty <strong>of</strong> Theology it is administered by the group <strong>of</strong> colleges,permanent private halls and theological colleges, to whom allenquiries should be made.|| Length <strong>of</strong> programme: Two years (full-time), three or fouryears (part-time)Postgraduate Diploma in TheologyThe course is primarily intended for those with a first degree ina subject other than Theology or Religious <strong>Studies</strong>.
