FLOOR AND FLOOR COVERING (continued)3. Floor Covering:a. Aisle Material: The floor covering in the aisles will be <strong>of</strong> aisle type elastomer, wearresistant and ribbed. Minimum overall thickness shall be .187 inch measured fromtops <strong>of</strong> ribs. Must meet the maximum burn rate <strong>of</strong> the most current National <strong>School</strong>Transportation <strong>Specifications</strong> & Procedures.b. Installation: All floor covering must be permanently bonded to floor and must notcrack when subjected to sudden changes in temperature. Bonding or adhesivematerial shall be waterpro<strong>of</strong> and shall be <strong>of</strong> a type recommended by the floorcoveringmaterial manufacturer. All seams must be sealed with waterpro<strong>of</strong> sealer.c. Trim: Seams shall be covered with extruded aluminum or stainless steel metal strips<strong>of</strong> a minimum three sixteenths (3/16) inches high and one (1) inch wide that shall beinstalled on each side <strong>of</strong> the aisle, the full length <strong>of</strong> the aisle, so as to secure boththe edges <strong>of</strong> the aisle covering and adjoining edges <strong>of</strong> the under seat covering. Thestrips shall be secured to the flooring with flush-mounted flat or low pr<strong>of</strong>ile ovalhead screws; holes for the screws shall be countersunk. The screws shall be placednot more than nine (9) inches apart for the full length <strong>of</strong> the metal strips except thatthe ends <strong>of</strong> each piece <strong>of</strong> stripping shall have screws placed at not more than threefourths (3/4) inches from each end. Screws may be placed nine and one half (9½)inches apart only to avoid interference with floor sill members.d. Under Seat Material: The floor in the under-seat area, including tops <strong>of</strong> wheelhousings,driver's compartment and toe-board, shall be covered with an elastomerfloor covering, having a minimum overall thickness <strong>of</strong> .125 inch. Must meet themaximum burn rate <strong>of</strong> the most current National <strong>School</strong> Transportation<strong>Specifications</strong> & Procedures. The driver's area in all Type A buses may bemanufacturer's standard flooring and floor covering. Floor covering on toe-boardshall be held in place by trim strip or molding.FUEL TANK SERVICE ACCESS PORTAn access port is required on all 35 - 90 passenger buses except front wheelchair lift equippedbuses with a side-mounted fuel tank.FUEL FILLER OPENING TYPE C & D BUSESThe body manufacturer shall provide an opening in the body panel to allow placement <strong>of</strong> thefuel nozzle into the fuel tank filler neck opening. This opening in the panel must be positionedso that the filler neck, when viewed at right angles from the side, is approximately centered inthe cutout. If the fueling nozzle must pass through the skirting the opening shall be providedwith a hinged cover designed and constructed so it will remain open when fueling is in progressand remain in a totally closed position at all other times. Lettering shall be adjacent to the fuelfiller opening indicating fuel type.HANDRAILSHandrails <strong>of</strong> not less than twenty (20) inches in length shall be installed on both sides <strong>of</strong> thestep-well. The outside surface <strong>of</strong> this handle shall be stainless steel or polished aluminum. Thehandrails shall not be mounted with tapered screws to sheet metal (excluding barriers). Thehandrails shall assist passengers during entry or egress, and be designed to prevententanglement, as evidenced by passage <strong>of</strong> the NHTSA String and Nut test.Section C-6
