LAMPS, SIGNALS AND WARNING DEVICESAlternately Flashing Signal Lamps; when the master switch is on, opening the lift door shallactivate the red warning lights with the ignition <strong>of</strong>f or on.LEVEL TESTThe sides <strong>of</strong> any bus provided with a wheelchair lift shall be within plus or minus two (2) inches<strong>of</strong> each other when measured from comparable points on each side to the ground with the busempty and parked on a level hard surface (such as concrete). Chassis springs and suspensionshall be adjusted as necessary to provide a level bus when the additional weight <strong>of</strong> a wheelchairlift is installed.HYDRAULIC SYSTEM AND RELATED COMPONENTSElectric-hydraulic wheelchair lifts shall be furnished with a hydraulic system for lift operation.The components shall include, but not be limited to, the following:Hoses and Fittings: Hose, hose fittings, and hydraulic fittings shall meet the requirements<strong>of</strong> SAE J517, J516, and J514, respectively, for nominal size(s) furnished.Hydraulic Cylinders: Hydraulic cylinders shall be installed for lift operations. Piston roddiameter <strong>of</strong> each cylinder shall be a minimum three fourths (3/4) inch. Cylinders shall havea minimum <strong>of</strong> thirty four (34) inches <strong>of</strong> extension action and shall lift a minimum <strong>of</strong> eighthundred (800) pounds in addition to the weight <strong>of</strong> the lift.Hydraulic Fluid Reservoir: A reservoir for hydraulic fluid shall be furnished and installed inan accessible location to allow easy checking <strong>of</strong> the fluid level and filling as necessary. Fluidcapacity and type shall be as recommended by the lift manufacturer.Hydraulic Valves: The system shall provide valves for the following actions:Over pressure: A pressure-limiting device to prevent over loading <strong>of</strong> the lift systemdesign capacity.Override: A bypass valve (or other means) shall be provided to prevent the lifting <strong>of</strong> thebus by over extending the hydraulic cylinders.Power Failure: The system shall be equipped with a manual back up system for raisingand lowering the wheelchair platform in case <strong>of</strong> power failure. No tools other thanthose provided and stored on the lift shall be required for manual operation.MAINTENANCE, TRAINING AND SERVICEDocuments: A comprehensive operator's, maintenance, and parts manual(s) shall be providedfor the lift with each bus. Parts manuals must be designed so that all replaceable parts areillustrated by line drawings and such parts are numbered on the illustration, with a partdescription on a separate list under the corresponding part number. Part descriptions should beannotated appropriately with the part number, a proper description (part name) and thequantity required for the application listed in the drawing. Any maintenance actions that, ifdone improperly, could result in an unsafe condition must be identified and clearly emphasizedin the maintenance manual. All components which must be isolated or identified for ease <strong>of</strong>troubleshooting and diagnosis, such as electrical wiring and components or hydraulic lines,hoses, or valves must be clearly identified in the service manual as to their specific functionsand relation to other parts.Section D-3
