Appendix B<strong>Aborig<strong>in</strong>al</strong> Heal<strong>in</strong>g and Wellness Strategy <strong>Suicide</strong> Prevention and Intervention Resource KitThe <strong>Suicide</strong> Prevention and Intervention Resource Kit was prepared by the Nishnawbe Aski Nation as theresult of a grant from the <strong>Aborig<strong>in</strong>al</strong> Heal<strong>in</strong>g and Wellness Strategy <strong>in</strong> Ontario. The program wasdeveloped by the <strong>Suicide</strong> Prevention Work<strong>in</strong>g Group, a task group established by the <strong>Aborig<strong>in</strong>al</strong> Heal<strong>in</strong>gand Wellness Strategy Jo<strong>in</strong>t Management Committee. The objective of this tool kit is to provide serviceworkers with a range of tools to help address suicide among <strong>Aborig<strong>in</strong>al</strong> youth. The kit provides background<strong>in</strong>formation on strategies to prevent and <strong>in</strong>tervene <strong>in</strong> suicide attempts. The ma<strong>in</strong> component of the tool kit isthe Wabanabe Puksayimoow<strong>in</strong> (Spirit of Hope) <strong>Aborig<strong>in</strong>al</strong> Youth’s <strong>Suicide</strong> Prevention and Intervention ResourceManual – 2004. This manual conta<strong>in</strong>s several resources, <strong>in</strong>clud<strong>in</strong>g: 1) <strong>in</strong>formation on <strong>in</strong>jury profiles for<strong>Aborig<strong>in</strong>al</strong> people <strong>in</strong> <strong>Canada</strong>; 2) a paper on cultural cont<strong>in</strong>uity as a hedge aga<strong>in</strong>st suicide; 3) <strong>in</strong>formationon traditional (<strong>Aborig<strong>in</strong>al</strong>) approaches to understand<strong>in</strong>g suicide; 4) an example of a background documentsupport<strong>in</strong>g a suicide prevention strategy; 5) an evaluation report; 6) a document on suicide preventionand mental health promotion <strong>in</strong> First Nations and Inuit communities; and 7) <strong>in</strong>formation on communityfactors and youth suicide. This manual with<strong>in</strong> the tool kit also conta<strong>in</strong>s practical examples of preventionstrategies <strong>in</strong>clud<strong>in</strong>g: 1) the New Zealand Youth <strong>Suicide</strong> Prevention Strategy – In Our Hands / Kia Pika TeOra O Te Taitamariki; 2) Wabanabe Puksayimoow<strong>in</strong> (Spirit of Hope) Example <strong>Suicide</strong> Prevention Strategy;and 3) Kashechewan First Nation <strong>Suicide</strong> Prevention Strategy.Other resources <strong>in</strong>cluded <strong>in</strong> the tool kit are: 1) Dilico Ojibway Child and Family Services Resource Manual asan example of an agency or treatment program suicide protocol; 2) The Resource Team Manual: A Guide forCommunity Based Resource Workers from the Shibogama Health Authority’s Payahtakenemow<strong>in</strong> Programas an example of a front-l<strong>in</strong>e suicide prevention/<strong>in</strong>tervention protocol; 3) Cards and posters for helpl<strong>in</strong>es <strong>in</strong>Northern Ontario; 4) The Nishnawbe Aski Nation <strong>Suicide</strong> Prevention Tra<strong>in</strong><strong>in</strong>g Manual, and accompany<strong>in</strong>gvideo as an example of a community-based tra<strong>in</strong><strong>in</strong>g manual; 5) discussion notes from a suicide preventionworkshop; the report Act<strong>in</strong>g on What We Know: Prevent<strong>in</strong>g Youth <strong>Suicide</strong> <strong>in</strong> First Nations from the AdvisoryGroup on <strong>Suicide</strong> Prevention (2003) mandated by the Assembly of First Nations and Health <strong>Canada</strong>; and6) a <strong>Suicide</strong> Resource List<strong>in</strong>g Booklet.Crisis <strong>in</strong>tervention workers <strong>in</strong> all 50 communities with<strong>in</strong> Nishnawbe Aski Nation (NAN) region havereceived tra<strong>in</strong><strong>in</strong>g <strong>in</strong> suicide prevention and <strong>in</strong>tervention and the tra<strong>in</strong><strong>in</strong>g is ongo<strong>in</strong>g. NAN <strong>Suicide</strong>Prevention Programs focus on the strength of family values and spirituality to help combat the high rate ofyouth suicide <strong>in</strong> the NAN territory.No longer available.127
