Ludder distributed AB 654 that was signed by the governor and includes that part-timefaculty should be considered to be an integral part of their departments…; be paid for the firstweek of an assignment when class is cancelled less than two weeks before the beginning of asemester; that salaries be proportionate to the salaries paid to full-time faculty with similarqualifications who do the same work.• M. Connell said that AFA will meet next Wednesday to discuss this bill. She also announced theupcoming Arts & Lectures events.• T. Ehret announced an evening with David Bromige, Poet Laureate on October 22 nd along withother upcoming events.• M. Pierce introduced Nicona Mulkovich, Chair of the Petaluma Faculty Steering Committee.• G. Freund announced the next Environmental Forum.• M. Bond announced the new International Studies program in Cuernavaca, Mexico thissummer, and encouraged senators to publicize this to their students.MINUTES:The Minutes of October 1, 20<strong>03</strong> were approved.REPORTS:• President's Report : Greg reported:1. Senators will be asked to participate in a steering committee on student learning outcomes.2. The State Academic Senate Fall Session will be held in Los Angeles on October 30-November1 st .• Senate/AFA Joint Task Force - Greg reported that the Task Force will meet on Friday to discussinterdepartmental relations. One area they are looking at is whether issues are handled differently inPetaluma than in <strong>Santa</strong> <strong>Rosa</strong>.• Faculty Staffing Committee - Brenda reported that the committee made a recommendation to hirenew and retirement faculty positions for Fall 2004. They were told there would be no hiring ofdeferred new faculty positions. The committee is going to decide if the need is greater for the threedeferred new positions than any new retirement replacement positions.• Curriculum Committee - C. Bennett reported that the New Curriculum Guide is now available online.ACTION:1. Policy 8.1.1 Academic Accommodations - The motion to accept Policy 8.1.1 AcademicAccommodations (Adjustment, Alternations, Substitutions/Waivers) for Students with Disabilitieswas approved with some minor changes.DISCUSSION:4 Faculty Professional Ethics Statement and Procedures - The revised Ethics Statementwas distributed. Many issues that would have come to this committee will now go to AFA forreview. An Introduction to the Faculty Professional Ethics Statement was added. Suggestions4
were made for further revision to the document. A motion was approved to move the FacultyProfessional Ethics Statement to the November 5 th Action <strong>Agenda</strong>.5 Goal #1 Review Board Policies and Processes - M. Eurgubian said the intention of this goalis to research what the Board and the communities understanding of what the role is of thesenate. Marge Grossman, Vince Bertsch, Barbara Croteau and Michael Eurgubian willparticipate on this research project.6 Senate view of Student Learning Outcomes - G. Granderson distributed information statingthat the Accrediting Commission expects that by Fall 2004 institutions have begun identifyingstudent learning outcomes, defining meaningful measures of accomplishment, and evaluationof results.7 Proposal for Changes to the Curriculum Committee - G. Granderson distributed aproposal requesting that the Curriculum Committee become a formal sub-committee of theAcademic Senate based on the California Ed Code and Title 5. A motion was approved tomove this to a discussion item on the November 5th <strong>Agenda</strong>.Meeting adjourned at 5:00 PMCopies of all materials distributed during the meetingare available from the Academic Senate Office5
