extent: A continuous space on a diskette that is occupiedby or reserved for a particular data set.external register: A register that is used by a microprocessor.External registers are not located within mainstorage and are not used by an appl ication program.extra line: Row 1 of the screen refresh buffer, which canbe displayed on the top row of the screen in place of thestatus line.field: One or more bytes of related information in a record.field attribute: See attribute.field correct mode: The mode in which the operator canenter data into a field during verification.field separator: A blank character position preceding everyfield of an enter record. This position is required for theattribute byte.fixed position prompt: A user-written message thatappears on a specified row of the display screen. A global load is initiated by the system whenthe load parameters are not specified for a LOAD instructionin an assembler program, and when an error occurswhen using the Standard Load Processor.global table: A table in the common area. The first twoglobal tables are the error recording tables. If the ASCIItranslate table is selected during system configuration, theASCII translate table is another global table.HOR 1 label: Control information written on a disketteindex that describes a data set on the diskette.hex: Hexadecimal. A number system using 16 symbols:0-9, A·F each representing 4 bits (one-half byte).host computer: The primary or controlling computer in adata communications system.H-type data exchange: A diskette data exchange formatthat uses 256-byte sectors. It allows only one record persector. The logical record length must be 256 bytes; it isunblocked and unspanned. The H-type exchange allowsyou to exchange data between 5280 and other systemsthat use the H-type data exchange format.10: Identification.index data set: A data set in which the keys from anotherdata set and their record position within that data set arerecorded. When index data sets are used, the followingaccess methods can be used: sequential; direct by relativerecord number; and direct by key value.index register: A register whose contents can be added toor subtracted from the operand address before or duringexecution of a computer instruction.indexed address: An address that is modified by thecontent of an index register before or during the executionof an instruction.indexed instruction: An instruction that requires addressmodification before the data byte is fetched from storage.indirect addressing: A method of addressing in which theaddressed storage location contains the address of thedesired data.
