In terms of the Environmental Impact Assessment Regulations the land ownermust be informed about any development on this land or adjacent to this land that requires environmentalauthorisation.Anglo Platinum Rustenburg Platinum Mine (RPM) – Union Section, is proposing to construct a ventilation shaft southeast of the mine lease area. The proposed ventilation shaft is a vertical passage that will be connecting theunderground workings with surface atmosphere, functioning to move fresh air underground to ensure a safeworking environment for the underground mine workers. The ventilation shaft footprint area with beapproximately 7 x 7m (49m 2 ), which will include the concrete platform which will surround it.SRK Consulting (SRK) has been appointed as the independent environmental assessment practitioner to undertakethe processes required for environmental authorisation and for Anglo Platinum Rustenburg Platinum Mine (RPM) –Union Section to apply for amendments to the existing Environmental Management Programme. These processeswill be conducted in compliance with the Minerals and Petroleum Resources Development Act (Act No.28 of 2002).Public participation processAs an integral part of the environmental studies, a public participation process will be undertaken to obtain thecomments and concerns of all interested and affected parties (I&AP's). As a potential I&AP you will be invited toparticipate through public participation procedures, which will be set up in the coming months. Herewith, attachedis the Background Information Document (BID) providing a detailed description of the proposed project andenvironmental processes to be followed.Should you wish to register as an I&AP and submit your comment or concerns, please fill in the response formattached to the BID and send this via e mail / fax to the responsible personnel below. Comments are welcome untilMonday 18 th of March 2013.1
