GUIDELINES19.6 Private and commercial drivers with a psychiatric disorder or psychoticepisodeApplicationAssessment guidelinesFitness guidelinesOSMV determinationguidelinesThese guidelines apply to driver fitness determinations for privateand commercial drivers who have: a psychiatric disorder, or a psychotic episode.If further information regarding an individual’s medical condition isrequired, OSMV will request: a Driver’s Medical Examination Report additional information from the treating physician additional information from the individual’s mental health team,or an assessment from a psychologist or psychiatrist.If the treating physician indicates that the individual may havepersistent functional impairment as a result of the condition or itstreatment, OSMV will request functional assessment(s) as appropriatefor the type of impairment(s) and class of licence held.Individuals may drive if: their condition is stable they have been assessed as having sufficient insight to stopdriving if their condition becomes acute they are compliant with any prescribed psychotropic medicationregime or other recommended treatment, including regularfollow-up where required for commercial drivers who have had a psychotic episode, aspecialist is supportive of their return to driving, and their functional abilities necessary for driving are not impairedOSMV may find individuals fit to drive if: their condition is stable and controlled their treating physician does not indicate any concerns withinsight they are compliant with any prescribed psychotropic medicationregime or other recommended treatment, including regularfollow-up where required for commercial drivers who have had a psychotic episode, aspecialist, or their treating physician if the physician has beentreating the driver for more than two years, is supportive of theirreturn to driving, and where the treating physician indicates possible persistent237
