A RTIKELThe DMI was built on the idea of documentingexamples of good practice and using this tostrengthen the disability movement. This processin South East Europe has since been replicatedin the Middle East. The original concept for MIW, therefore, wasto build upon the lessons learned from the DisabilityMonitor Initiatives and, in particular, tocreate a transferable methodology (a step-bystepproject approach) that could be effective atlocal, national or regional level.MIW now has members and partners fromdisability, human rights and development organizationsacross the world. We are workingtogether to collect and exchange examples ofgood practices, using this evidence to influencepolicy-makers and practitioners. This work is underpinned by the core conceptof Inclusive Development:Inclusive Development is the process of ensuringthat all marginalized/excluded groups areincluded in the development process. The articles of the CRPD are useful tools toensure that all phases of the development cycle(design, implementation, monitoring andevaluation) include a diversity dimension, where people with disabilities have meaningfulparticipation at all levels. 1MIW projects are managed by multi-stakeholdersteering committees to ensure collaborationbetween disabled people’s organizationsand other civil society groups. This participatory approach, involving a widerange of civil society actors with expertise indisability issues at the local level, adds credibilityand legitimacy to recommendations made togovernments and decision-makers.Work website: www.makingitwork-crpd.org2010 will see the launch of a series of MIWtoolkits to complement the MIW guideline andMIW focal point training for international organizationswishing to develop MIW projects.MIW projects• MIW projects are independent projects. Thismeans they have their own funding and governance, preferably driven by multi-stakeholdersteering committees comprised ofcivil society organizations (including disabledpeople's organizations).• MIW projects can be effective at regional, national or local level. The scope of the projectwill depend upon the capacities, expertiseand resources available.• MIW projects will usually focus on one disabilityrights issue. For example, this couldbe inclusive education (article 24 of theCRPD), employment (article 27) or inclusivesports (article 30).Regardless of the location of the project, thescale or the thematic focus, all MIW projectsshare four common objectives:1. To collect information on key disability issuesand good practices that (a) uphold the principlesof the CRPD and (b) impact positivelyon the lives of people with disabilities.2. To document this information in a report orpublication with concrete recommendationsfor improving policies or practices.3. To carry out advocacy and training activitiesbased on the report recommendations.4.
