Itwas written by Vera Hendriks, who currently is working asan intern for the Mainstreaming Disability Programme ofDark & Light.The study is about the strengths and weaknesses ofmainstreaming of disability, which means taking into accountthe wishes and needs of people with a disability inregular development programmes. Also, it deals withadapting specific disability-oriented programmes to ensurethat they will start to focus more on the regular outsideworld, and in this way will raise awareness with nondisabledpeople about the ability of people with an impairmentto participate in society.Mainstreaming and inclusion are terms which occurmore and more in the literature and in development programmes.It is about the acceptance of impairments bysociety, and about the normalness of making developmentprogrammes and public services accessible to people withdisabilities. Dark & Light is currently working on assessingtheir own projects and on looking at how their partnersthemselves can take care that their target group can integratewith the community they live in, are educated in andwork in.
