TNB has beencontributing to the SREP by way of helpingdevelopers of potential SREP projects identifysuitable points of interconnection with the TNBdistribution network as well as throughundertaking technical studies. We have alsoentered into long-term RE Power PurchaseAgreements (REPPA) with RE proponents. As atthe end of FY2009, we had signed 11 REPPAstotalling 54.55 MW. To date, we are the midstof finalising negotiations to conclude a total of15 REPPAs with other SREP developers usingbiogas, biomass and mini-hydro as RE resources. The sustainable utilisation of energy continues tobe given priority by the Government. In April2009, following a Cabinet reshuffle, the Ministryof Energy, Green Technology and Water(MoEGTW) was formed, thus presenting anothermilestone in the Government’s commitmenttowards Green Energy. Subsequently on 24 July2009, the Prime Minister introduced the FiveStrategic Thrusts of the National GreenTechnology Policy. Given the prominence thatGreen Technology has assumed within thenational landscape, TNB is fully supportive of theneed to strengthen the commitment and focusrequired to implement Green Technologyparticularly in Malaysia’s energy sector. On our part, we have already been activelycontributing to the Green Technology segmentthrough our involvement via the SREP and theREPPAs we have signed. On top of this, whollyowned subsidiary, TNB Energy Services, has alsoimplemented several mini hydro projects inPeninsular Malaysia. We are also involved in several ongoing solarhybrid projects which utilise solar energy, dieselengine and battery power to provide anuninterrupted 24-hour long supply of electricity toremote areas and islands which are far from themainland. In addition, some of our large hydroschemes with a reservoir power density ratio largerthan 4 W/m2 are also considered RE projectsbased on the definition by the United NationsFramework Convention on Climate Change.TNB will continue to play an active role tosupport the National Green Technology Plan/Roadmap through raising public awareness anddisseminating information on energy efficiency(EE). Recently, we collaborated with theFederation of Malaysian Consumer Associations(FOMCA) on a National Energy EfficiencyAwareness Campaign called SWITCH! whichaims to raise awareness on EE, promote EEpractices, as well as improve and increase usageof EE products and equipment. As part of ourcorporate responsibility efforts, TNB has pledgedto contribute RM1.5 million to the campaign.TNB is also committed to undertaking trainingand capacity building initiatives through UniversitiTenaga Nasional (UNITEN), Integrated LearningSolution Sdn. Bhd. – ILSAS and TNB ResearchSdn. Bhd. Besides establishing a Centre ofExcellence on RE, UNITEN also hosts the newlylaunched Institute of Energy Policy and Research(IEPRe).To sustain Malaysia’s long-term energyrequirements and to ensure energy security forthe Nation, alternative large scale energytechnology with minimal carbon emissions suchas hydro from Sarawak and nuclear power arecurrently being considered as viable alternativesfor our electricity generation mix. We havealready begun working with several stakeholdersand agencies, in particular the Malaysian NuclearAgency (Nuclear Malaysia), to explore theviability of nuclear energy as an alternative fuelsource for the future.CAPACITY BUILDING BOLSTEREDTNB’s 29,149-strong workforce is our greatestasset and we remain committed to developingour employees’ capabilities to ensure the Group’ssustainable growth.
