<strong>Tenaga</strong> <strong>Nasional</strong> <strong>Berhad</strong> 62 Annual Report 2009Operations ReviewGeneration (Cont’d.)MAJOR PROJECTSRehabilitation and Redevelopment ProjectsTwo major rehabilitation projects were completedduring the Financial Year namely the TuankuJa’afar Power Station Rehabilitation Phase 2(PD2) Project in Port Dickson, Negeri Sembilanand the Cameron Highlands & Batang PadangHydroelectric Schemes Life Extension Project inCameron Highlands, Pahang.The PD2 combined cycle gas turbine TuankuJa’afar Power Station Rehabilitation Phase 2Project was commissioned as scheduled inDecember 2008. The plant is now under a oneyear warranty period. The turnkey Engineering,Procurement and Construction (EPC) contractorwas a consortium of Sumitomo, Toshiba and GE.The commissioning of this project adds anadditional installed capacity of 694 MW to theexisting 715 MW PD1 plant.The 260 MW Cameron Highlands & BatangPadang Hydroelectric Schemes Life ExtensionProjects were for the rehabilitation of 15generating units that would extend the operatinglife of the Cameron Highlands HydroelectricScheme by another 30 years. It has been inoperation for the last 45-50 years since early1960’s. The projects were commissioned over a3 year period from March 2005 to December2008. The hydroelectric schemes consist of fourexisting major stations, i.e. JOR (100 MW), WOH(150 MW), Odak (4.2 MW), Habu (5.5 MW) andRobinson Fall (0.9 MW). The main projectcontractor was Siemens (M) Sdn Bhd. The Ringletreservoir was also rehabilitated to recover itslive storage, flood mitigation capability andpeaking capability.TNB had also sought approval from the relevantauthorities to redevelop the Prai Power Station,which involves the installation of a 220 MWOpen Cycle Gas Turbine (OCGT). The EIAConsultant engaged to conduct additionalenvironmental assessment has since submittedthe final draft EIA Report. However, TNBmanagement had decided in July 2009 to deferthe project commissioning date to 2014.New ProjectsTwo new major hydroelectric projects namely the250 MW Hulu Terengganu Hydroelectric Projectin Terengganu and the 372 MW Ulu JelaiHydroelectric Project in Pahang, are now at theprocurement stage. Construction of these twoprojects are expected to commence in May 2010and Commercial Operation Date (COD) is targetedfor November 2014 (Hulu Terengganu) and forApril 2015 (Ulu Jelai). The preliminary Civil Worksare required to commence by November 2009 toensure the targeted start date for the Main CivilWorks construction be met.Tenders for the Main Civil and Electrical &Mechanical Works have been floated and arescheduled to close in August and October 2009for Ulu Jelai and Hulu Terengganu projectsrespectively.Other Joint Venture ProjectsThe 300 MW coal-fired IPP Project in Sabah, wasawarded to a consortium of TNB Remaco, Eden-Nova, Maser and Sabah State owned companyby Sabah Electricity Sdn Bhd. A special purposevehicle company namely Lahad Datu Energy SdnBhd has been formed to implement the project.The site has been relocated to Felda Sahabat,Lahad Datu (approximately 100 km from LahadDatu town). Site preliminary and survey worksare currently in progress to be followed by a newDetailed Environment Impact Assessment Study.
