Whenevera people is forced to accept, will<strong>in</strong>gly or unwill<strong>in</strong>gly,a certa<strong>in</strong> course of action, the result has usually beenthe opposite of what was desired.But if without be<strong>in</strong>g <strong>in</strong>terfered with <strong>in</strong> their cherishedcustoms, ideas, language and traditions, theyare surrounded with a genial <strong>America</strong>n atmosphereand are given suitable opportunities to learn A<strong>in</strong>ericanways, ideas, language and <strong>in</strong>stitutions ; <strong>in</strong> short,if they are <strong>gr</strong>adually taught what is good <strong>in</strong> theirnew surround<strong>in</strong>gs, while they reta<strong>in</strong> what was goodand useful <strong>in</strong> their former life, all the immi<strong>gr</strong>antswill be <strong>America</strong>nized <strong>in</strong> due time.Even the word ^^<strong>America</strong>nization'' sounds strangeto many ears ; it sounds like suppression, force. Letthe immi<strong>gr</strong>ant have freedom to contribute his bestto the welfare of <strong>America</strong>. As the various raceshave brought their national dishes, customs andusages, so let each contribute his peculiar talent andaccomplishment <strong>in</strong> art, letters or bus<strong>in</strong>ess, thoughhe may be deficient <strong>in</strong> the knowledge of the Englishlanguage.
