Eeligious <strong>in</strong>struction is given by representativesof the Greek Church.Controversies.—But other missionaries alongwith the work of education and enlightenmentstarted controversies by discuss<strong>in</strong>g po<strong>in</strong>ts of differencebetween Protestants and Orthodox, and a bitteropposition was aroused which prejudiced the peopleaga<strong>in</strong>st the missionaries, except those of the ProtestantEpiscopal Church, who never attempted to makeproselytes.Jonas K<strong>in</strong>g.—Mr. Jonas K<strong>in</strong>g, the <strong>America</strong>nBoard missionary <strong>in</strong> Greece, took a lead<strong>in</strong>g part <strong>in</strong>the controversies both by publication and oral teach<strong>in</strong>gand discussions. The opposition aga<strong>in</strong>st himwas so bitter that he was anathematized by theGreek Church and condemned by the government toleave Greece.M. D. Kalopothakes.—Protestant work <strong>in</strong> Greecewas cont<strong>in</strong>ued by Dr. M. D. Kalopothakes, whoworked for a time under the Southern PresbyterianBoard and after 1887 <strong>in</strong>dependently. He was afighter and controversialist. He was <strong>in</strong>strumental<strong>in</strong> organiz<strong>in</strong>g the Greek Evangelical Church <strong>in</strong>Athens <strong>in</strong> 1874, where he preached and taught thegospel regularly till his death <strong>in</strong> 1912. He wasagent of the British and Foreign Bible Society andwas <strong>in</strong>strumental <strong>in</strong> distribut<strong>in</strong>g the Scripturesthroughout Greece. He founded <strong>in</strong> 1859 The Starof the East, a religious weekly, the oldest paper <strong>in</strong>Greece. Its publication ceased dur<strong>in</strong>g the war.It has been started aga<strong>in</strong> recently. He edited the
