But the characteristic adjectiveshe particularly and emphatically appropriates forherself is ^'Orthodox." She claims to have preservedthe teach<strong>in</strong>g of Christ and the Apostles as<strong>in</strong> the early church <strong>in</strong> all its purity and <strong>in</strong>te<strong>gr</strong>ity.In all the essentials of Christian doctr<strong>in</strong>e the GreekChurch, <strong>in</strong> its official teach<strong>in</strong>g, is Orthodox and conservativecompared with many another denom<strong>in</strong>ation.Thus, <strong>in</strong> regard to the doctr<strong>in</strong>es of God, theTr<strong>in</strong>ity, the Div<strong>in</strong>ity of Jesus Christ, redemption,and eternal life, she holds the most orthodox position.There is no Pope, no papal supremacy, nor <strong>in</strong>fallibility,no doctr<strong>in</strong>e of the Immaculate Conception.Tradition is regarded as a source of revelationalong with the Scriptures and the work of the HolySpirit <strong>in</strong> the church.There is no doctr<strong>in</strong>e of purgatory, but prayers aresaid for the dead. There is no doctr<strong>in</strong>e of penancesnor <strong>in</strong>dulgences, though pil<strong>gr</strong>ims to Jerusalem canbuy papers of absolution from their s<strong>in</strong>s. Thereare three orders of m<strong>in</strong>istry, bishop, presbyter orpriest, and deacon. The bishops of the prom<strong>in</strong>entcities are called archbishops or metropolitans. TheArchbishops of Constant<strong>in</strong>ople, Antioch, Jerusalemand Alexandria are called patriarchs. Archimandriteis the title of the monastic clergy of the rankof presbyter.
