THE GREEKS IN AMERICA 133Protestant churches exclusively among the <strong>Greeks</strong>.The need is extremely <strong>gr</strong>eat, and the field scarcelytouched. There is no social settlement, <strong>in</strong>stitutionalchurch or evangelism exclusively for the<strong>Greeks</strong>. They get the benefit of the^general services<strong>in</strong> English <strong>in</strong> factories, open-air meet<strong>in</strong>gs, and othermethods of evangelism. Settlements such as HullHouse, Chicago, are com<strong>in</strong>g <strong>in</strong>to touch with <strong>Greeks</strong>as well as other races. The Protestant EpiscopalChurch welcomes the <strong>Greeks</strong> to the facilities, privilegesand social advantages of their church houses,as well as to its church services. Doubtless otherchurches would give the same welcome. But theGreek responds more readily to the ProtestantEpiscopal call.EVANGELICAL WORK AMONG THE GREEKS BYPROTESTANT CHURCHESThe Con<strong>gr</strong>egational churches first took a special<strong>in</strong>terest <strong>in</strong> the <strong>Greeks</strong> <strong>in</strong> <strong>America</strong> and started missionarywork among them. The missions <strong>in</strong> theNear East, and so the Greek field, is under the<strong>America</strong>n Board, consequently Greek Protestantimmi<strong>gr</strong>ants usually affiliate with the Con<strong>gr</strong>egationalchurches. The Massachusetts Home Missionary Societyof the Con<strong>gr</strong>egational churches has had foryears Greek evangelical work <strong>in</strong> Boston, Lowell, andHaverhill, Mass.In general the other Protestant denom<strong>in</strong>ationsassume that the Greek field belongs to the Con<strong>gr</strong>egationalists,and they <strong>in</strong> turn confess they are not <strong>in</strong>a position to carry the work alone without the helpof other denom<strong>in</strong>ations.The Protestant Episcopalians are aga<strong>in</strong>st anyProtestant work among the <strong>Greeks</strong>. They are veryfriendly and ever ready to help the <strong>Greeks</strong> to helpthemselves. They loan them churches, chapels and
