THE GREEKS IN AMERICA 97<strong>in</strong> the Near East have <strong>gr</strong>eatly strengthened thesebonds of affection and have drawn the <strong>Greeks</strong> closerto <strong>America</strong>n ideals and <strong>in</strong>stitutions.Those who have come to the United States havealways been loyal to the <strong>America</strong>n government,laws and other <strong>in</strong>stitutions, and feel much attachedto the <strong>America</strong>n people. Everywhere they wish toget acqua<strong>in</strong>ted with <strong>America</strong>ns, to learn their waysand get the benefit of the educational, social andother opportunities. Those who know English andare able to appreciate <strong>America</strong>n thought and idealsare drawn with deepest admiration to <strong>America</strong>.Those who are apparently distant or unappreciativeare usually ignorant of the language, hence unableto understand this country, and so rema<strong>in</strong> isolatedand clannish, keep<strong>in</strong>g company with their compatriotsonly, and always us<strong>in</strong>g the Greek language.Democratic.—All <strong>Greeks</strong> feel <strong>gr</strong>ateful for the hospitality,and bus<strong>in</strong>ess and educational opportunitiesthey f<strong>in</strong>d on <strong>America</strong>n soil. <strong>Greeks</strong> are truly democraticby nature, temperament and upbr<strong>in</strong>g<strong>in</strong>g. Theideas of the oldest democracy <strong>in</strong> history, and thoseof the <strong>gr</strong>eatest republic of modern times—of alltimes—are identical. Therefore devotion to Greekideals is not antagonistic to loyalty to <strong>America</strong>; onthe contrary they go together and strengthen eachother. All true <strong>America</strong>ns have been lovers andfriends of Greece, sympathetic <strong>in</strong> all her difficulties,and k<strong>in</strong>dly towards her aspirations. In turn all true<strong>Greeks</strong> have always admired <strong>America</strong>n ideals andaspired to learn and practice them.This we see illustrated <strong>in</strong> those <strong>Greeks</strong> who havestudied <strong>in</strong> <strong>America</strong>n schools and colleges <strong>in</strong> the NearEast or United States. Graduates and students ofthese <strong>in</strong>stitutions have been warmly devoted to them,and have acted everywhere as missionaries of <strong>America</strong>nideas and <strong>in</strong>stitutions. They are among theleaders and best <strong>in</strong>fluences <strong>in</strong> the life of Greek com-
