THE GREEKS IN AMERICA 113<strong>America</strong>nization of the children.—Many a simple,illiterate immi<strong>gr</strong>ant may turn out to be more loyalto <strong>America</strong>, than the so called cultivated theoristswho can chatter, parrot-like, good English, but areunsound <strong>in</strong> morals and unpr<strong>in</strong>cipled <strong>in</strong> action. It isdifficult and <strong>in</strong> some cases impossible to change thehabits of the adult. It is different with the youngand the children. They are open to impressions,and the future lies with them. They will all get<strong>America</strong>nized through education. The public schoolis the melt<strong>in</strong>g pot where children of all races arebe<strong>in</strong>g assimilated. Many Greek children who arebe<strong>in</strong>g educated <strong>in</strong> <strong>America</strong>n schools, answer theirparents <strong>in</strong> English who speak to them <strong>in</strong> Greek.The even<strong>in</strong>g schools are of immense value. Bothmen and women are attend<strong>in</strong>g even<strong>in</strong>g classes, <strong>in</strong>the public schools, Y. M. C. A. and the various <strong>Greeks</strong>ocieties.Y. M. C. A.—The Y. M. C. A. is br<strong>in</strong>g<strong>in</strong>g many<strong>Greeks</strong> <strong>in</strong>to contact with <strong>America</strong>n ways, ideas, customs,and moral and spiritual ideals. A <strong>gr</strong>eat manyare now jo<strong>in</strong><strong>in</strong>g the Y. M. C. A. <strong>in</strong> different parts ofthe country. In New York, the 23rd Street Branchis becom<strong>in</strong>g a center for foreign born men. A Greekbranch had 165 <strong>Greeks</strong> connected with it <strong>in</strong> 1920 and300 <strong>in</strong> 1921. Special social gather<strong>in</strong>gs are heldwhere <strong>Greeks</strong> and <strong>America</strong>ns meet, get acqua<strong>in</strong>tedand discover unexpected qualities and attractions <strong>in</strong>each other.Meet<strong>in</strong>gs for <strong>Greeks</strong> are held, addressedby prom<strong>in</strong>ent <strong>Greeks</strong> and <strong>America</strong>ns. Even<strong>in</strong>gclasses of various k<strong>in</strong>ds are held. A Greek musiciangives lessons on the viol<strong>in</strong>, guitar and mandol<strong>in</strong>.Many are <strong>in</strong>terested by assignment to various subcommittees.A Greek assists the <strong>America</strong>n Secretariesand their pro<strong>gr</strong>am <strong>in</strong>cludes help<strong>in</strong>g the immi<strong>gr</strong>antson land<strong>in</strong>g at Ellis Island, f<strong>in</strong>d<strong>in</strong>g them lodg<strong>in</strong>gsand employment and help<strong>in</strong>g them <strong>in</strong> otherways. Some young <strong>Greeks</strong> room <strong>in</strong> the Y. M. C. A.
