THE GREEKS IN AMERICA 117on the part of the missionaries regard<strong>in</strong>g the <strong>Greeks</strong>,and <strong>America</strong>n missionaries generally were unfavorably<strong>in</strong>cl<strong>in</strong>ed towards them. Some even thought theywere obst<strong>in</strong>ate, distant, and unsympathetic. Yetthose who came <strong>in</strong>to touch with them through the reliefwork were impressed so favorably, that somebecame enthusiastic about them. Many <strong>America</strong>nscontributed both money and service to the cause.The <strong>Greeks</strong> know their friends and feel deeply <strong>gr</strong>atefulfor such sympathy and helpfulness. Such mutualacqua<strong>in</strong>tance and cooperation cont<strong>in</strong>ues on theother side too <strong>in</strong> the actual field of relief activities.In July, 1921, the Greek Relief Committee handedits work over to the Near East Eelief which cont<strong>in</strong>uesthe work.Another organization that helped <strong>gr</strong>eatly <strong>in</strong> br<strong>in</strong>g<strong>in</strong>g<strong>America</strong>ns and <strong>Greeks</strong> to better acqua<strong>in</strong>tancewith and appreciation of each other was the <strong>America</strong>nHellenic Society under the Presidency of Dr.Nicholas Murray Butler, President of ColumbiaUniversity. Its ma<strong>in</strong> object was to br<strong>in</strong>g the Greekcause before the <strong>America</strong>n people and enlightenthem on Greek questions, but it did a <strong>gr</strong>eat deal <strong>in</strong>w<strong>in</strong>n<strong>in</strong>g the <strong>Greeks</strong> to <strong>America</strong>n ideals and <strong>in</strong>stitutions.The Society published several books andbooklets on Greek affairs, especially the politicalsituation. It was discont<strong>in</strong>ued November 14, 1920.Similarly the Red Cross, the Y. M. C. A. and theY. W. C. A. have done much to impress on the immi<strong>gr</strong>antas well as the people <strong>in</strong> Greece and Asia M<strong>in</strong>orthe true ideals of <strong>America</strong>nism. They have shownthe best <strong>in</strong> <strong>America</strong> and have attracted the love andadmiration of all towards <strong>America</strong> and the <strong>America</strong>npeople.Many who are unable to utter a word <strong>in</strong> Englishare truly devoted to <strong>America</strong>n ideals as a result ofthe varied activities of the above mentioned organizations.
