Neither has thecountry been involved in international surveys, inparticular for those chemicals which persist for a longtime in ecosystems, such as POPs and heavy metals.Pollution hotspots around closed industrial sites areof serious environment and health concern (Chapter7). The copper, chromium, iron-nickel and oilindustries have produced several million tons ofindustrial waste which have been dumped withoutany environmental or health considerations. Inaddition, urgent measures are required for the safedisposal of a number of chemicals stored inside theproduction lines of closed chemical factories.Albania has adopted an extensive body of legislationon environmental protection and management, andon air and water quality, but does not have specificlegislation addressing hotspots, in particular on soilprotection, industrial pollution and ownership ofpolluted sites.
