Standard Mixtures for EPA Method 8000 SeriesFor Solid WasteBackground InformationThe analytical methods used to identify and quantifyorganic compounds in solid waste are provided in US EPASW-846, also known as the 8000 series methods. These methods were developed in response toenvironmental problem areas such as Love Canal, N.Y.and Times Beach, MO. A historical perspective of theevolution of this series includes the Resource andConservation Recovery Act (RCRA), which was amendedby the Hazardous and Solid Waste Act (HSWA). HSWAalso addressed previously exempted underground storagetanks containing petroleum and some hazardoussubstances. The 8000 Series product line contains standards used inthe proposed and promulgated methods for theidentification and quantitation of organic compounds onthe EPA’s Appendix VIII and Appendix IX lists in groundwater, waste water, and solids at hazardous wastetreatment, storage, and disposal sites. An additionalmethod Toxicity Characteristic Leaching Procedure(TCLP) Method 1311 is used with 8000 series methods toestimate the toxicity of solid waste materials under theleaching conditions found in a landfill. The organic compounds listed in these methods includevolatile organic compounds (VOCs), pesticides, syntheticorganic compounds (SOCs), and disinfection by-products.DetectorsAnalytical techniques used in identification andquantification include gas chromatography with selectivedetectors (AED, PID, ELCD, ECD, FID, FTIR, NPD, FPD,TEA, TCD) gas chromatography /mass spectrometry, andhigh performance liquid chromatography.ComprehensiveComplete analysis of target compounds by these 8000Series Methods can be accomplished using the series ofstandards formulated by AccuStandard for each methodalong with the required internal and surrogate standards.Formulations for 8000 series methods have beendeveloped as easy-to-use large core mixes containingtarget compounds and as high concentration sub mixesfor combination with other formulations to meet laboratoryspecific analyte detection requirements.Method # Method Descriptions 211-2538000, APP IX Appendix IX Individual Analytes 212-2138000, APP IX Appendix IX Mixtures 2138000 Volatile & Semi-Volatile Mixtures 2148000 Series Volatile Internal/Surrogate Standards 2158010, 8010A/B * Halogenated Volatiles (ELCD) 216-2178011 EDB & DBCP (GC/MS) 2178015A, 8015B Non Halogenated Organics (FID) 2185031 Azeotropic Distillation 2188020 Aromatic Volatiles (PID) 2188021B Halogenated Volatiles (PID/ELCD) 219-2208030A Acrolein & Acrylonitrile (FID) 2208031 * Acrylonitrile (NPD) 2208032, 8032A * Acrylamide (ECD) 2208033 Acetonitrile (NPD) 2208040, 8040A Phenols (FID) 2218041 Phenols as PFB Derivatives (FID/ECD) 2228060 Phthalate Esters (ECD) 2228061A Phthalate Esters (ECD) 2228070A Nitrosamines (NPD/TEA) 2238080A * Organochlorine Pesticides & PCBs 224-2288081/8081A/B * Organochlorine Pesticides (ECD) 224-2288082 PCBs (ECD) 2298085 Pesticides (AED) 230-2318090 Nitroaromatics & Isophorone (TCD/FID) 2318091 Nitroaromatics & Cyclic Ketones (ECD/NPD) 2318095 Explosives (ECD) 2328100 Polynuclear Aromatic Hydrocarbons (FID) 2328110 Haloethers (FID) 2328111 Haloethers (HECD) 2338120, 8120A Chlorinated Hydrocarbons (ECD) 2338121 Chlorinated Hydrocarbons (ECD) 2338131 Aniline & Derivatives (NPD/AFD/TSD) 2338140 Organophosphorous Pesticides (NPD/ELCD/FPD) 2348141A * Additions to Method 8140 (GC/NPD) 2348150A, 8150B Chlorinated Herbicides (ECD) 235-2368151 Chlorinated Herbicides (ECD) 235-2378240, 8240A Volatiles Packed Column (GC/MS) 237-2388240 & 8260 Combined Method Volatile Organics 237-238, 2418260B Volatiles (GC/MS) 239-2408270, 8270C/D Semi-Volatile (GC/MS) 242-2478275A Semi-Volatiles (Thermal Chromatography) 2478280A Dioxins & Furans (HRGC/LRMS) 2488310 Polynuclear Aromatic Hydrocarbons (HPLC) 248-2498315, 8315A Ketones/Aldehydes (HPLC) 2508316 Acrolein, Acrylamide, Acrylonitrile (HPLC) 2508318 * N-Methylcarbamates (HPLC) 2508321 Solvent Extractable Non-Volatiles (HPLC) 2518323 NEW Organometallic Tin Analysis (Ion Trap MS) 2518325 Benzidine & Nitrogen Pesticides (HPLC/MS) 2518330 * Explosives (HPLC) 252-2538410 * Semi-Volatiles (FTIR) 2538430 bis(2-Chloroethyl)ether & Hydrolysis Products 2538440 Total Petroleum Hydrocarbons (IR) 253* These Methods can be found in the SW-846 update II, Nov. 1992, rev. 28000 Series MethodsTel. 800-442-5290 / 203-786-5290 • Fax 203-786-5287 • Web AccuStandard.com 211
