The objective of this paper is to stimulate professionaland energy-producing community to pay more attention on the PV solarpower technology and solar energy production. Some introductory principlesfrom the photovoltaic cell theory are renewed, the current state of the world’ssolar cells technology is overviewed and grid-connected power systems arebriefl y explained. The introduction of new feed-in tariffs in Serbia is discussed,as well as the importance of the research and educational support in the fi eld ofsolar power engineering. Some practical data and considerations, from the pointof view of a customer who is keen to invest in the solar energy production, aregiven.Key words: Solar Energy, Solar Cells, Solar Energy Production. IntroductionThe share or renewable sources ofenergy in the EEC countries energyconsumption should double from 6%in 2000 to 12% in 2010, but it waspredicted that by mid-21 st centurywould reach about 50%. The growthof the installed solar power systemscapacity in the EEC countries, accordingto forecasts, should increase from32 in 2000 to over 3000 MW of peak[059]power in 2010, [1-3]. Such predictionsencourage us that humanity willnot suffer from an energy crisis in thefuture due to the depletion of the conventionalfossil resources (oil, naturalgas, coil) if it succeeds in masteringtechnologies for using solar energy. Sofar, all kinds of renewable sources ofenergy (hydraulic energy, geothermalenergy, wind energy, biomass conversionenergy, energy obtained from thewastes, ocean and wave energy, tidal
