United Nations membership dates: The United Nations is an intergovernmental
organization whose members are the countries of the world. Currently there are 192
Member States of the United Nations, some of which joined the UN by signing and
ratifying the Charter of the United Nations in 1945; the other countries joined the
UN later, through the adoption of a resolution admitting them to membership. The
process usually follows these steps: first, the country applies for membership and
makes a declaration accepting the obligations of the Charter; second, the Security
Council adopts a resolution recommending that the General Assembly admit the
country to membership and finally the General Assembly adopts a resolution
admitting the country.
