RECREATION
3 Recreation
The recreational interests of persons with disability are no different from those without disabilities. However,
persons with disability do require more strength to handle their everyday life than non-handicapped persons.
Relaxing and satisfying recreation are therefore of particular importance to this group of people. As the
needs of persons with disability do not at all differ from those of healthy persons, aside from those dictated
by the individual handicap itself, they ought to have the same recreational activities available to them,
whether it be sports, travel, cultural events, or contacts and social encounters.
The following will present a number of offers in these areas which hopefully can contribute to the recreational
planning of people with disabilities. We would like to stress that this information represents only a small
section of what’s available, especially from clubs, associations and self-help groups in the area of
Handicapped Assist. As the listing of all available projects and events would exceed the space available for
this guidebook, we again make reference to the listing of “Clubs – Associations – Organizations”.
3.1 Recreational Activities for Children and Youth
● Public Playgrounds
Many facilities on public playgrounds of the City of Kiel are also suitable for use by children with mental
disabilities, possibly assisted by another person. At the present time, in most cases there is no direct access
to playground equipment for children with physical and/or multiple disabilities. However, a playground
located at Mittelstrasse/Teichstrasse (near Dreiecksplatz) was remodelled into an integrated playground for
children with and without disabilities. The Office for Schools, Children and Youth Institutions by the City of
Kiel is always interested in hearing suggestions for improving the playground options for children with
disabilities.
