1.1 Municipal Advisory Councils and Help Line Agencies
● Advisory Council for Persons with Disability in the State Capital Kiel
The establishment of the Advisory Council for Persons with Disability in August 1981 in the City of Kiel
created an official board for persons with disability. The task of this agency is to actively support the
offices and organizations of the State Capital in all matters relevant to disabled persons. The advisory
council is authorized to provide written statements and recommendations to city government and relevant
committees on all planning and decision-making activities which affect persons with disabilities.
For many years, the focus of the Advisory Council for Persons with Disability has been to improve the
building infrastructure within the City of Kiel for persons with disability (the key phrase being “barrier-free
living”). Additional topics frequently discussed by the Advisory Board are the improved mobility of disabled
citizens of Kiel, improved living conditions, employment quotas, the school development plan, early
advancement for children with disabilities, as well as violence against persons with disability.
The members of the Council are also available to assist individuals who are looking for help and advice.
Sessions of the Advisory Council for Persons with Disability are open to the public, and anyone interested
in this matter is always welcome.

● Coordinating Office for Persons with Disability
[Leitstelle für Menschen mit Behinderung]
The Coordinating Office for Persons with Disability is part of the Department of Families and Social
Welfare [Amt für Familie und Soziales]. An essential task of this department is to advise and inform
persons with disability, or threatened by disability, who are looking for help. Our staff members assist you
with special problems, with finding the right contact persons, and offer you comprehensive information
material on the topic of “Disability”.
