4. Weighting (optional)<br />

The different environmental impact categories <strong>and</strong>/or Areas of Protection are ranked<br />

according to their relative importance. Weighting may be necessary when trade-off<br />

situations occur in LCAs which are being used <strong>for</strong> comparing alternative products.<br />

The <strong>ILCD</strong> <strong>H<strong>and</strong>book</strong> focuses on the two m<strong>and</strong>atory steps of ‗Classification‘ <strong>and</strong><br />

‗Characterisation‘. The two optional steps of ‗Normalisation‘ <strong>and</strong> ‗Weighting‘ are not the focus<br />

of this Guidance Document.<br />

Impacts on the Areas of Protection are modelled by applying knowledge about the<br />

relevant impact pathways or environmental mechanisms as illustrated in Figure 1-2.<br />
