• Paracetamol and salicylate concentrations should be measured<br />

if there is suspected ingestion of either, or the ingested drugs are<br />

unknown. The timing of sample collection is important.<br />

• Plasma concentrations of certain other drugs can be helpful, e.g.<br />

carbamazepine, digoxin, iron, lithium, phenytoin, theophylline and<br />

thyroxine.<br />

• In cases of severe unexplained metabolic acidosis after suspected<br />

overdose, consider measurement of aspirin, ethanol, methanol<br />

and ethylene glycol concentrations, and check CK (discuss with<br />

local laboratory).<br />
