parcelles ancestrales d’Herdade do Esporão
l’essence de la tradition prend tout son sens ;
monopole.
reçue chez Cocagne, voir p. 47
Herdade do Esporão
Alentejo, Portugal
Born in Portugal in 1974, Sandra Alves is a
child of the revolution. Her journey through the
great oenology and agronomy universities of the
world eventually led her to Australia, the ultimate
country of contrasts, before she returned to Portugal’s
Douro Valley wineries in 1997. In 2004
she finally landed at the historic Herdade do
Esporão winery, where her youthful strength and
enthusiasm, and incredible winemaking talents,
have earned her countless awards and medals.
hosted by Ferreira Café, see p. 49
Since 1853, the Ciavolich’s family vineyard
has been sculpting a spectacular landscape in
Italy’s Abruzzo region with its magnificent pergolas
of such ancestral and classic grape varieties
as montepulciano, trebbiano d’abruzzo, and
the extremely rare pecorino. The new Ciavolich
generation puts all 44 hectares of the estate to
use, reserving a few hectares here and there
for the cultivation of chardonnay. Tradition is a
way of life for Ciavolich—the quality of her rustic,
authentic and lovingly cultivated wines is a testament
to her family’s relentless work.
hosted by BU, see p. 46
Champagne Cuillier
Champagne, France
Maryline Cuillier grew up in the vineyard and
although she studied international management
with a major in finance, she found herself right
back where she started when she decided to put
down roots in the Niagara Peninsula. She later
returned to France to help her parents develop
their champagne export markets, and enrolled
in the oenology centre at Dijon’s Université de
la Vigne et du Vin. She currently oversees the
estate’s harvests and openly professes her love
for Champagne—both the magnificent region
and its unique eponymous wine.
hosted by Laurie Raphaël, see p. 55
Judi Cullam co-founded Frankland Estate in
1988 with her husband Barrie Smith with the
intention of diversifying their long-established
Western Australian sheep farm. With 25 hectares
of certified organic vines in a perfect climate
for riesling, and producing some remarkably
mature reds, Isolation Ridge vineyard and
Frankland Estate garner much success. The quality
of their work—praised by Master of Wine Jancis
Robinson—has made Frankland Estate one
of Australia’s four leading and most promising
wineries today.
hosted by Le Balmoral, see p. 56
In 1996 Agnès Dewé-de Launay took over from
her father at Meix-Foulot, running the estate
and continuing her legacy: respecting the terroir,
ensuring the expression of terroir in her
wines, and perfectly timing the bottles’ release
to ensure that burgundy aficionados experience
the wine at its peak. Since 2005, in her new fermentation
cellar, Dewé-de Launay and her team
have been striving to achieve the purest form of
pinot noir at each of her vineyards—Les Veleys,
Les Saumonts and the monopole Clos du
Château de Montaigu.
hosted by Cocagne, see p. 47
