• <strong>Sport</strong> provides youth with opportunities to engage in positive relationships with<br />
adults and to safely navigate between right and wrong, thus helping build character.<br />
Youth who participate in sport have higher grades in school and complete more years of<br />
education. Through sport, young athletes learn valuable life skills, such as emotional<br />
control, the value of teamwork, and the ability to show initiative, and these skills<br />
transfer to academics, family life, and eventually the work environment.<br />
• Studies have found that girls and young women who engage in sport gain confidence<br />
and self-esteem and are less likely to be overweight, depressed, smoke, use illegal drugs,<br />
or have teen pregnancies.<br />
Why We Play <strong>Sport</strong> and Why We Stop<br />
Most children start playing sport because it is fun, and when it stops being fun, they<br />
are likely to stop participating. Other motivators to play include receiving social<br />
support from peers, parents, and teachers; developing physical skills; getting in shape;<br />
and building friendships.<br />
