sants temples doriques presque intacts, d’agoras,
Sicily, an Italian treasure
In Sicily, Maupassant writes : “If a man only had one day to spend on the island, what should
he see ? My answer would definitely be : Taormina.“ This Sicily so close and yet so far must be
slowly savoured, according to the distinguished travellers who discovered it and sang about
it at the end of the 19th century. You will find genuine treasures in Sicily, a friend of Tunisia.
like Maupassant, we start our tour in
Taormina and its Greek theatre where
a renowned cinema festival takes place
since 1955. It’s in June, during starry
nights, that thousands of spectators
gather on the steps of the theatre to
enjoy the most varied film projections.
Sicilian treasures
This theatre in Taormina was built by the Greeks
during the 3rd century BC. Later, it was almost entirely
rebuilt by the Romans and converted into an arena for
gladiator fights. The 109m diameter theatre, divided
in 9 sectors can house 5.000 spectators. It is the
second largest theatre in Sicily after Syracuse.
Taormina’s skene is perfectly preserved and the
acoustic is exceptional. Situated at a prime location,
besides its historical and archaeological importance,
Taormina’s theatre offers a breathtaking view over the
sea and the Etna. Distinguished tourists such as
Maupassant used to go there especially for that view.
Exceptional site, the Etna is recognised by UNESCO
as a world heritage site.
A few exceptional sites
recognised by UNESCO, not-tobe-missed
Situated near the Strait of Messina, the Etna is the
highest active volcano in Europe and one of the world’s
largest. The Etna was inscribed on the World Heritage
List in 2013 for it represents a natural science
laboratory on volcanic areas and its intense activity
has been observed and reported since ancient times.
There are written records dating back approximately
2.700 years. According to the UNESCO, it is a “world
record regarding documents on volcanoes“.
