Folk Music
All things Folk....
BY BRIAN KEW
(Bury Folk Collective)
We at the Collective are not just
a group of folkies who sing songs
of despair and despondency, well
sometimes maybe, we are purveyors
of all things folk.
This includes art, dance, musical tuition, theatre et
al. I would like to mention a similar committed group
of people who have been purveying folk a lot longer
than ourselves. They are Suffolk Folk.
Suffolk Folk is a non profit making organisation who
promote traditional song, music and dance in Suffolk.
They financially support traditional folk projects
which they promote in schools as well as workshops,
concerts and one off events held throughout
the year.
If your school would like to be involved in what they
do, make contact, you may be surprised in what’s on
offer. Contact Jill Parsons - info@suffolkfolk.co.uk.
On the 2nd of this month the first Bury Folk
Collective traditional singers competition was held
at Oakes Barn in memory of Robin Callas. Robin
was a traditional singer who could often be seen
feeding squirrels in the Abbey Gardens, Nowton
Park or Hardwick Heath. He was a frequent visitor
to the Milkmaid Folk Club but never managed to
get to the Bury Folk Collective at Oakes Barn due to
illness. Robin was a member of the original Bury Folk
Club held at the St Edmunds Head pub. Who can
remember that little gem?
The singing competition was very professionally
contested having fifteen contestants from all over
Suffolk. Managed and organised by Dave and Linda
there were some super performances and to my
mind all had a chance of winning.
It came down to a close call when Liz and Jerry were
declared the winners marginally beating Simon Kelsa
who sang the Battle of the Nile. Liz and Jerry won
with a superb rendition of Child ballad #216 titled
Clyde Waters. I think the Collective will now look
forward to next year when Liz and Jerry come to
defend their title. I’m in, is anyone else?
