21 Überreste der Wittekindsburg –
Rulle – Wallenhorst
Heute sind nur noch einige Hausfundamente und Spuren
von Herdstellen zwischen dem Grün des Waldes sichtbar.
Im 8. Jahrhundert lag hier im schönen Nettetal die
Wittekindsburg. Erwiesen ist es nicht, ob die Burg wirklich
etwas mit dem Sachsenherzog zu tun hat. Nur die
Legende spricht davon: es geht um „Karl den Großen“,
der gegen die heidnischen Sachsen kämpft, und um den
sächsischen Adligen Widukind, der sich damals in die
Wittekindsburg flüchtete. www.rulle.de

Today only the foundations of a
house and traces of hearths are
visible amongst the vegetation
of the forest. In the 8 th century
Duke Wittekind’s Castle was located
in the beautiful “Nettetal”
valley. There is no evidence that
this is really the former castle of
the Duke of Saxony. Only legend
tells of Charlemagne fighting
the heathen Saxons and of the
Saxon nobleman “Widukind”
who escaped into the castle.
Das Kloster Rulle ist eine ehemalige Zisterzienserinnenabtei
in der Gemeinde Wallenhorst. Im ehemaligen
Äbtissinnenhaus, das unter Denkmalschutz steht,
befindet sich seit 1957 eine Jugendbildungsstätte.

The convent Rulle is a former Cistercian abbey in the
commune of Wallenhorst. The former abode of the
abbess, which is an officially protected monument,
now serves as a youth education centre, established
in 1957.

Westfälischen Friedens
Von der Rathaustreppe in Osnabrück wurde am 25.
Oktober 1648 nach 30 Jahren Krieg in der Mitte Europas
der Frieden verkündet. Der Westfälische Friede, zuvor
fünf Jahre lang in Münster und Osnabrück ausgehandelt,
setzte Maßstäbe für die Verfassung und entwickelte eine
ganz neue Idee: den europäischen Gedanken. Die Maxime
„Frieden als Aufgabe – dem Frieden verpflichtet“
bestimmt heute das politische und kulturelle Leben der
Stadt.
2012 wird das im spätgotischen Stil erbaute Rathaus
500 Jahre alt. Vor den Treppenstufen erwartet der
Nachtwächter seine Gäste mit kleinen Laternen zu den
beliebten Nachtwächtertouren. Der Marktplatz ist seit
jeher Herz der Stadt, Treffpunkt und Ort zum Feiern.

Town Hall of the Peace of Westphalia
After 30 years of war in Central Europe, peace is proclaimed
on October 25 th 1,648 in front of the town hall
steps in Osnabrück. The Peace Treaty of Westphalia,
which had been negotiated over a period of five years in
Münster and Osnabrück, sets new standards for the constitution
and develops an entirely new idea: the European
idea. Nowadays, the maxim „A commitment to peace“
governs the political
and cultural life
of the city.
In 2012, the late
Gothic city hall
celebrates its 500 th
anniversary. The
night watchman
awaits his guests
in front of the city
hall steps with
small lanterns,
ready to take them
along on the popular
nightwatch tour.
At all times, the
marketplace has
been the heart of
the city, meeting
place and place of
celebration.
