Numerous sites of interest, such as the two viewing
balconies, the redwood tree, the museum for industrial
heritage, the so called “Piesberger Gesellschaftshaus”
as well as the revived mine train station and a circular
walking trail make the “Piesberg” an interesting place for
excursions.
Der Westerberg dient der Bevölkerung als Naherholungsgebiet,
da er von der Stadt in wenigen Gehminuten
erreichbar ist. Am Westhang liegt der Botanische Garten
Osnabrück und am Fuße des Berges das Zentrum für
Umweltkommunikation der Deutschen Bundesstiftung
Umwelt.
25 Rundwanderweg und
Aussichtsplattform Piesberg
Der acht Kilometer lange Rundwanderweg des canyonartigen
Steinbruchs eröffnet viele faszinierende Ausblicke:
auf den Steinbruch und das Osnabrücker Land mit dem
Teutoburger Wald und dem Wiehengebirge. Er führt in ein
Gelände, das Natur und Kultur gleichermaßen geprägt
haben: Wanderer erleben eine Landschaft, die in den
vergangenen 150 Jahren stark industriell genutzt wurde.
Zu sehen sind unter anderem durch den Steinabbau
freigelegte Steilwände mit den Kohleflözen, die – ähnlich
einem aufgeschlagenen geologischen Bilderbuch – 300
Millionen Jahre Erdgeschichte dokumentieren.
Mountain “Westerberg”: The “Westerberg” serves as a
local recreation area, as it can be reached within a few
minutes on foot. At the west side of the hill, the Botanic
Garden of Osnabrück can be discovered. The center for
environmental communication of the DBU (German Environmental
Foundation) can be found at the foot of the hill.
Der Schölerberg: An seinem Fuß liegt das Museum am
Schölerberg mit seinem Umweltbildungszentrum, das
Planetarium sowie der Osnabrücker Zoo. Zu Gast bei
TERRA.vision – dem Infozentrum des Naturparks und im
Außengelände TERRA.park wird die spannende Erdgeschichte

HIGHLIGHTS
Mountain “Schölerberg”: The “Schölerberg Museum”,
which houses the centre for environmental education,
the planetarium and the Osnabrück zoo, is located at the
foot of the “Schölerberg”. As a visitor to the Nature Park
Centre called “TERRA.vision” and in the outdoor “TERRA.
park”, one can experience earth history in an exciting way.

An eight kilometres long circular walking trail in the
Canyon-like quarry provides many fascinating views:
into the quarry, across the entire landscape around
Osnabrück, including the “Teutoburger Wald” and the
“Wiehengebirge”. The trail leads the visitors into a countryside
which has been shaped equally by natural and
cultural processes: Hikers experience a landscape that
has been used industrially for the past 150 years. In addition
to other attractions they can view the steep faces with
exposed coal seams which were uncovered by quarrying.
This geological picture book with its coal seams and rock
layers documents some of the 300 million years of Earth
history.
