Dr. Sr. A. L. Lando<br />

Sr. Dr. Agnes Lucy Lando is the Deputy Head<br />

of Communication Department and also a<br />

senior lecturer. Dr. Lando obtained her Ph.D<br />

in Social Communication from The Pontifical<br />

Gregorian University, Rome in 2008. Among<br />

the c<strong>our</strong>ses she teaches are Communication<br />

and Media Theory, Communication Ethics,<br />

Crisis Communication, Media Management,<br />

Advanced Audio-Visual Productions,<br />

Human Communication and Intercultural<br />

Communication. She has published quite a<br />

number of articles Her writings contribute<br />

to the growing scholarship on media ethics,<br />

higher education, media studies, new media<br />

and communication theory in the African<br />

context and beyond.<br />

In June 2013, a paper she co-authored<br />

with six MA Communication students, by the<br />

title: “Retesting Cultivation Theory on the<br />

Origins, Causes, and Predictors of Aggression:<br />

The Case of Pre and Post Genocide Rwanda”<br />

won the 2013 George Gerbner Excellence<br />

Award in Budapest, Hungary.<br />

Dr. Lando is a member of various national,<br />

regional and international communication<br />

academic bodies and has presented<br />

peer-reviewed papers both locally and<br />

internationally. Her research interests are<br />

in Media Studies, Communication Theory,<br />

Crisis Communication, and Communication<br />

Ethics. She has received partial ICA Travel<br />

Grant to the 2015 ICA Conference in San<br />

Juan, Puerto Rico where she is scheduled to<br />

mentor upcoming researchers in the field of<br />

Communication. She also received similar<br />

grants In 2014 and 2013.<br />

In February 2014, she was appointed<br />

the external examiner for dissertations<br />

submitted by postgraduate candidates of<br />

Makerere University - MA J<strong>our</strong>nalism and<br />

Communication. Dr. Lando is also the<br />

Africa Regional Liaison for International<br />

Communication Association (ICA) ; and was<br />

mandated to work towards holding the first<br />

ICA-Africa Region Conference in Africa within<br />

the next two years.<br />

Her current research, co-authored, is<br />

entitled, “Traditional African Culture and<br />

Communication: The Missing Link in Cattle<br />

Rustling Interventions among Pastoralist<br />

Communities in Northern Kenya”<br />

One of her greatest joys is to see her<br />

students grow to her level or even surpass<br />

her. In July 2016 she will lead a group of<br />

f<strong>our</strong> MA Communication students to Berlin<br />

to present their papers at the 11th Global<br />

Communication Association Conference.<br />

In an attempt to provide a lasting solution<br />

to the perennial school fees plight of a<br />

number of MA Communication students<br />

in Daystar, on 14th March 2013, Dr. Lando<br />

together with some MA Communication<br />

students founded Master Communicators<br />

Welfare Association (MCWA) that aims<br />

at raising money and paying fees for<br />

financially challenged but academically able<br />

MA Communication students of Daystar<br />

University. This fund is 100% student run,<br />

under her guidance as their patron.. Since its<br />

inception, MCWA has awarded 3 scholarships.<br />

The next scholarship will be on 14th March<br />

2016 (cf: http://www.mcwa-kenya.com/).<br />

Dr. Paul Mutinda Mbutu<br />

Dr. Mbutu holds a Ph.D from Texas A & M University. His research interests are in<br />

the areas of qualitative, organizational, institutional, and sociological approaches to<br />

communicative phenomena. Of special interest to him is how people use various<br />

communicative and discursive res<strong>our</strong>ces to approach leadership training and manage<br />

inter-ethnic conflicts.<br />

Dr. Mbutu has also conducted research and written about qualitative and quantitative<br />

methodologies, content analysis in media, performance evaluation in organizations, client<br />

feedback surveys for the World Bank, HIV/AIDS prevention and control baseline surveys,<br />

and youth status surveys in an Africa city. Some of his research has been published<br />

by Daystar University, Nairobi, Kenya. In addition to his scholarly writing and research,<br />

Dr. Mbutu has continued his teaching career upon his return to Daystar University in<br />

November 2012. He also conducts training with NGOs in Kenya, in leadership training,<br />

inter-ethnic conflict management and the youth, as a way to blend his theoretical and<br />

practical interests.<br />

Dr. Mbutu is currently the University Registrar.<br />
