Etiquette:- Dress Code
A Candid Christian
Perspective on Dressing
By Phyllis Njoroge
Our dressing is one key thing that defines the kind of person
one really is. We tend to judge people according to how
they are dressed. In public speaking for example, we are
tempted to accept or dismiss a speaker based on how they
are dressed. If a speaker is well groomed, he or she is bound to have
some influence over people even before he or she says a word to
them.
Many people invest a lot of money in clothing in order to please
themselves, while others do so to become acceptable to their peers.
As Christians, however, one thing is true; clothing is a key necessity
in revealing the image and the values that we represent; that of God.
From the story of creation in Genesis, clothes play an important role
in covering our shame. After the fall of man, God made clothing for
Adam and Eve, to cover their shame. Likewise, when Jesus comes
into our lives, He does not cover our blemishes with makeup, but
embraces us with his love and clothes us with His righteousness.
“Your body is sacred. Respect it and do not defile it...” This is
agreeably a familiar phrase to many. As a Christian, it would be
careless to say, “how I dress is no one’s business!” On the contrary,
humans were created in God’s image (Genesis 1:26); therefore, how
we look should reflect God’s holiness. In 1Timothy 2:9-10, the Apostle
Paul writes, “I also want the women to dress modestly, with decency
and propriety, adorning themselves not with elaborate hairstyles or
gold or pearls or expensive clothes, but with good deeds, appropriate
for women who worship the Lord”.
Clothes may not define us as Christians, but our identity
is revealed through what we wear. Christians do not have a
standardized way of dressing but we are urged to follow Christ’s
lifestyle. Most of the time we are at fault when we get carried away
by the short term attention and adoration that comes with alluring
clothing, at the expense of the long-term holiness that comes with
modesty.
One moral in the story of Samson and Delilah in Judges is that
how we look may attract various kinds of people to us. Samson fell in
love with Delilah because of her outward appearance notwithstanding
that she was a Philistine. This applies to our Christian life today;
irresponsible dressing may attract the wrong kind of people to us; it
may attract a mix of non-believers and interfere with our relationship
with God. Hence, as Apostle Paul puts it, Christians should teach the
younger generation how to live as believers.
Undeniably, the topic of modesty in dressing is becoming very
important as we move into the perilous immoral times. However,
modesty is a matter of the heart; a person’s heart must get it right
about modesty before real and lasting changes are made.
