ladies team, beating the Hockey ladies
team and the Volleyball men team to it.
The Hockey ladies however scooped the
Most Promising Team of the year trophy.
The Team of the Year award went to the
Falcons Soccer team, in a category that
had the Basketball ladies and the Rugby
team as nominees.
The Daystar Chess Open was
named the most successful Sports
event. Harriet Njenga became the Team
Manager of the year after a successful
season campaign with the Volleyball
ladies team. James Muiruri of Soccer
got the Captain of the year award in
absentia. For the most coveted trophies
of the night, Alice Wanjiru of Hockey was
crowned Sportswoman of the Year to a
thundering applause from the gathering.
This was an impressive achievement for
her after she clinched the Rookie of the
Year award in last year’s event.
The Falcons Soccer team, for the
second time consecutively, produced the
Sportsman of the Year, this time in one
Ali Lenjo. The skillful forward trounced
nominees; Billy Ochieng of Rugby and
Dennis Otieno of Volleyball in that
category.
Mr. Maurice Masiga praised the
outgoing Sports Secretary Ian Smith for
his great efforts in running the office
and organising the dinner amidst a lot of
challenges and budget constraints. He
also thanked the event sponsors who
comprised, Airtel, Coca Cola Company,
DSTV and Corporate Affairs Department
of Daystar University.
Finally, a candlelit vigil in honour of
the Garissa University massacre victims
was conducted where one hundred
and forty seven candles were lit and a
rendition by Songstress Libby Kighendar
as well as the words of the National
Anthem left a lamenting atmosphere to
the gathering.
