ladies team, beating the Hockey ladies<br />

team and the Volleyball men team to it.<br />

The Hockey ladies however scooped the<br />

Most Promising Team of the year trophy.<br />

The Team of the Year award went to the<br />

Falcons Soccer team, in a category that<br />

had the Basketball ladies and the Rugby<br />

team as nominees.<br />

The Daystar Chess Open was<br />

named the most successful Sports<br />

event. Harriet Njenga became the Team<br />

Manager of the year after a successful<br />

season campaign with the Volleyball<br />

ladies team. James Muiruri of Soccer<br />

got the Captain of the year award in<br />

absentia. For the most coveted trophies<br />

of the night, Alice Wanjiru of Hockey was<br />

crowned Sportswoman of the Year to a<br />

thundering applause from the gathering.<br />

This was an impressive achievement for<br />

her after she clinched the Rookie of the<br />

Year award in last year’s event.<br />

The Falcons Soccer team, for the<br />

second time consecutively, produced the<br />

Sportsman of the Year, this time in one<br />

Ali Lenjo. The skillful forward trounced<br />

nominees; Billy Ochieng of Rugby and<br />

Dennis Otieno of Volleyball in that<br />

category.<br />

Mr. Maurice Masiga praised the<br />

outgoing Sports Secretary Ian Smith for<br />

his great efforts in running the office<br />

and organising the dinner amidst a lot of<br />

challenges and budget constraints. He<br />

also thanked the event sponsors who<br />

comprised, Airtel, Coca Cola Company,<br />

DSTV and Corporate Affairs Department<br />

of Daystar University.<br />

Finally, a candlelit vigil in hon<strong>our</strong> of<br />

the Garissa University massacre victims<br />

was conducted where one hundred<br />

and forty seven candles were lit and a<br />

rendition by Songstress Libby Kighendar<br />

as well as the words of the National<br />

Anthem left a lamenting atmosphere to<br />

the gathering.<br />
