Rev. Dr. Peterson Mwangi
Rev. Dr. Peterson Mwangi holds a Ph.D
in Counseling Psychology, Masters in
Education in Guidance and Counseling
and Bachelor of Education, from Kenyatta
University. He has over twenty years’
experience, working with adolescents and
young adults in educational institutions and
Churches.
Dr. Mwangi is the Associate Dean, Student
Affairs at Daystar University. He earlier
served as the students’ counselor for
the last eight years, and lectures in the
Department of Counseling and Psychology.
For five years, Dr. Mwangi served as the
Secretary General of the Kenya University
Professional Counselors Association
(KUPCA). This is a professional body
that brings together counselors and
psychologists practicing in Kenyan Private
and Public universities. It was during
his tenure, that he spearheaded the
registration of the association by the
government, and the development of a
common peer counselors’ curriculum for
use by the over 25 member universities.
The formation of KUPCA was motivated by
the desire of counselors, practicing in both
Private and Public universities to create a
forum to address issues unique to their
counseling environment.
Additionally, Dr. Mwangi is currently a
governing council member of the Kenya
Guidance, Counseling and Psychological
Association (KGCPA). The association targets
counsellors and psychologists working in
different sectors in the country.
He has research interest in family,
specifically in adolescents, young adults
and marriage. Dr. Mwangi presented a
paper on “Morality, Drug Abuse and the
Family” at a conference held in October
2014 at Strathmore University, Nairobi,
Kenya. He was also the keynote speaker in
that conference, which brought together
participants from different parts of the
world.
He is an ordained minister with the
Pentecostal Evangelistic Fellowship of Africa
(PEFA) Church. As a senior leader in the
church for the last 15 years, he has used his
expertise in Counseling and Psychology to
enhance counseling programs in different
Churches. He has developed a counseling
curriculum for pre-marital candidates
at Donholm PEFA Church and a Pastors
in-service training manual for pastors in
Murang’a district PEFA churches.
