Daystar Grabs Top Award<br />

If there is anything Daystar can be proud of is being home to the first and ever Mr.<br />

University Kenya. David Julius, a 3rd year Communication student concentrating on<br />

Electronic Media is the former Mr. Daystar University 2014-2015, former Mr. Daystar<br />

Academics, Beauty and Brains pageant 2013-2014 and proudly the Mr. University Kenya.<br />

The feted much awaited event was successfully held on the 31st of May at The KICC as<br />

from 9:30pm. David Julius was partnered with the gracious former Miss Daystar University<br />

2014-2015 and also former Miss. Academics Beauty and Brains Pageant 2013-2014, Rachael<br />

Matayen, as together they represented Daystar University. The competition featured twenty<br />

f<strong>our</strong> other Mr. and Miss Universities from various universities across the country.<br />

The Mr. and Miss University Kenya (MMUK) Pageant was started 7 years ago and is<br />

hosted by Pambazuka Entertainment CEO Leakey Odera and Vice President Asyago Brian<br />

Coke (ABC). The pageant was originally limited to Miss University Kenya but inaugurated the<br />

first Mr. University this year. They are also the founders of the Mr. and Miss Daystar pageant.<br />

The judges were Paul Kibukosya (Ulopa Ngoma), Idah Nguma, The current Miss World Kenya,<br />

Esther C Boyo, Virginia Gathura, Elijah Nyabera, and Esther Timanoi Rorat.<br />

The MMUK Gala night was a show to behold as the models showcased their talents and<br />

modelling skills in f<strong>our</strong> different categories; Introduction, African traditional wear and design,<br />

Creative wear and lastly Dinner wear. The curtain raiser was a tribute song towards the<br />

MMUK theme, ‘Education is Key’ performanced by the models. It highlighted the<br />

current affairs within Africa with regard to terrorism, insecurity and Xenophobia.<br />

Once again David Julius and Rachael Matayen represented Daystar well as<br />

they belted out their Rap and Melody parts in the song and dance to<br />

start off the event. Next was the model’s dance presentation that was<br />

a combine choreography of a traditional pop song that wowed the<br />

crowd and judges.<br />

The first category was the Introduction where the models<br />

gave a show of the different runway walks in style and<br />

fashion. The category was followed by the African traditional<br />

category where the models showcased outfits by different<br />

designers and self-created outfits as well.<br />

The third category was the creative category<br />

which was mainly dominated by the theme<br />

education is key with tribute to the 147 victims<br />

of terror of Garissa University. Models brought<br />

the crowd into a frenzy with their very creative<br />

and heart felt tributes to their fellow fallen<br />

comrades. The models then got to entertain<br />

the crowd with their talent presentations .<br />

The modelling category was brought to a<br />

glitzy and glam<strong>our</strong>ous end with the Dinner<br />

wear category which was donned with<br />

slow and graceful choreography.<br />

Finally, the models were called on<br />

stage by the MC Obina where they were<br />

presented with certificates. This then paved<br />

the way for the Question and Answer session<br />

by the judges for the group of twelve finalists. The session saw the<br />

finalists answer questions concerning current issues and challenges<br />

in Kenya, Africa and the world as well as general knowledge questions.<br />

The judging was comprised of 60% prejudging which was before the<br />

gala night and 40% on the actual day. The 60% included the model’s<br />

individual characters and discipline, participation in group activities,<br />

involvement in corporate social responsibility drives, charity events<br />

and community development projects which they had been involved in<br />

during the three prior months of training of the program to the end of
