DUAA Ladies Networking Event “DelicateSTEEL” By Phyllis Njoroge and Mercy Milanoi The Daystar University Alumni Association (DUAA) held its first ever ladies networking event dubbed ‘DelicateSTEEL’ on 27th March 2015. The event, held at the Nairobi Safari Club, was part of the Daystar Alumni Association initiative, to provide a platform where old and new alumni meet and network. The event was organized by the Daystar University Alumni office in conjunction with Divine Vox, an events company led by Kyesubire Greigg, a Daystar University Alumnus. The event’s theme ‘DelicateSTEEL’ as explained by Ms. Kyesubire Greigg, the MC was guided by the stereotype stating that “as women get more influential and powerful, they lose their softer side and embrace male tendencies.” The reality is that even as women need to assert themselves, there is always a need to remain connected to who God created them to be. The call was for each one to be a woman who is soft as a velvet cloth but yet as hard as a nail; one who delivers on time, maintains high standards and excellence, yet remains open and receptive to people. The first speaker was Ms. Irene Mwathi, Communications Manager at Proctor &Gamble (P & G), and alumni from Class of 2005. She shared about the importance of trusting God in everything one does, in order to maneuver and rise above politics. Irene highlighted how she started her career at P&G as an intern and the challenges she encountered working with people who had more experience in the field. She admitted that prayer has been and remains a key factor in her life and that it has taken God’s guidance for her to get to where she is today. “Letting God take control over everything is very important because at the end of the day the talents and skills we have are all for His glory,” she said. The second speaker at the event was Ms. Janet Ligare, Class of 2002, Daystar Alumnus Kyesubire Greigg speaks to the guests at the Networking-in-heels gathering. a serial entrepreneur, currently runs several businesses, among them TV content production. Janet called on the participants to be true to themselves. She also emphasized the importance learning from others and pouring out our lives into others. She cautioned the participants against getting carried away by expectations of the society saying, “We are transformed servant leaders therefore in order for us to transform the different industries, we need to be ourselves.” In addition, she emphasized the need to allow God to be our guide towards excellence in all that we do. The Keynote speaker was Ms. Caroline Waiyaki, Senior Partner Kittony Waiyaki Advocates. She spoke about establishing the true expression of Christ. Having become a single mother at the age of 18 years, Caroline’s life manifests the words of Jeremiah 29:11 that God has plans for all of us; plans to prosper us and not harm us. She emphasized the need for all of us to be examples of Christ to our friends, colleagues and family. She further said that our lives should be a sermon; ministering to people even if they don’t get a chance to interact with us, one on one. “Despite the challenge of being in the legal industry where stereotypes about ethics and dishonesty are common, it is my job as a Christian to ensure that Christ is seen in my way of life and dealing with clients,” she said. The Daystar University Alumni board was represented by Ms. Florence Koros, and Ms. Catherine Butaki. Ms. Koros explained that the purpose of the Daystar University Alumni Association is to reconnect, network, mentor and support one another. She also emphasized that it is important for all Alumni to find their place and plug in and be an active part of the association. On her part, Ms. Catherine Butaki thanked everyone for their participation and encouraged everyone to take their place and be part of the Daystar Alumni family. 56 • DaystarConnect 2015
DUAA 2062i You Are Never Alone By Kyesubire Greigg The Daystar University Alumni Association (DUAA) is the next step after graduating from Daystar. It is a place to learn more about industry, connect with others in the field, share, learn and give back to the world around us. In the last few years after slump inactivity, a deliberate and concerted effort has been made to revive the Daystar University Alumni Association (DUAA). The greatest challenge has been creating programs that unify the alumni and galvanise participation. In 2013 the ground work was finalised and the new face of DUAA was defined to create a vehicle that would bring the alumni to the desired destination of engaging in Christian Higher Education. DUAA is now ready and set for the re-launch before the end of the year 2015 with Vision DUAA 2062i to guide us. DUAA 2062i is DUAA reloaded with the vision of fifty years of engagement in the work of mobilizing resources from among alumni of Daystar University towards the cause of Christian Higher Education in Africa. Before we get there however, we need you on board. You are joining an ever-growing vibrant team of world changers – 16,000 and counting – spread across the globe…so welcome aboard. The goal of DUAA 2062i is to create a vehicle to mobilise funds, create opportunities for engagement, build lasting partnerships, provide insight, oversight and foresight for programs and significantly change the Christian Higher Education landscape in Kenya, East Africa, Africa and the World. For the success of DUAA 2062i, we need the full engagement of ALL our Alumni. This engagement can only be realised by creating value and opportunity for the Alumni to connect. There are several planks that make this vision viable and possible. The main plank in DUAA 2062i vision is a new Structure achieved by the formation of virtual, local-city and country-based chapters. It is called our “growing small to grow big” strategy. Daystar alumni, anywhere is the world can form chapters and connect to our global body through the DUAA secretariat. The chapters meet and interact around local issues for mutual interest but are connected to the big body from anywhere in the world. Wherever it is you plan to go and change the world after graduating, you are still within reach. The global Board of Directors will initiate and manage the ever-growing list of corporate partners and connect every individual alumnus and every DUAA chapter to enjoy the benefits of the partnerships including job placements, business opportunities among others and to manage relations with our alma mater. The Board of Directors is elected every three years from the chapters to provide strategic international leadership for the Association in conjunction with our alma mater. The second plank is Engagement to provide relevant, value based products to the members through stand-alone programs as well as win-win strategic partnerships. The third plank is Legacy, which is to create a platform from which alumni can give back to Daystar University through shared experiences, internship programs for students, mentorship programs, scholarships other similar activities. The three planks have to be explored simultaneously and 2015 has seen the launch of the first item in the Engagement plank for value based benefit. In partnership with Kenya Commercial Bank, DUAA has launched the new co-branded Alumni card. The DUAA card is a pre-paid loyalty Master Card and membership vehicle being introduced for the first time to you the Class of 2015 graduate and will subsequently be rolled out to all our 16,000 members.
