Sea-surface temperature (SST)<br />

In situ SST data obtained from the Waverider Buoy between<br />

March and July 1997 and February and July 1998<br />

indicated that the mean SST reached its highest values<br />

during February (28.5 o C) and March (28.1 o C) 1998<br />

(Figure 13). The long-term mean sea temperature at this<br />

time of year is 27 o C, thus temperatures were 1 o C - 1.5 o<br />

C higher than normal. SST was higher in 1998 than in<br />

1997 in both March (1998: 28.1 o C; 1997: 27.5 o C) and<br />

April (1998: 27.4 o C; 1997: 26.8 o C). No data were available<br />

for February 1997. SSTs were significantly higher in<br />

February and March 1998 than in April-July 1998 (student’s<br />

t-test: T = 5.19, df = 7, p
