When starting naturopathic therapy
with thyroid disease, one first attempts
to induce a balance in other key areas,
primarily in the immune, hormonal, adrenal,
and gastrointestinal areas. Thyroid
disease patients who undergo this targeted
therapy program are few, although
enormous regenerative capacity has been
shown when there are no serious inflammatory
issues in play. It is important
however, to approach this treatment as
Sprouts as medicine
a complex whole, as opposed to tackling
each symptom individually.
Among the main therapeutic aims, harmonization
of the various immune system
components should be included as
follows: pinpointing and removing autoimmune
response triggers, optimizing
digestion and improving the nutritional
value of our diet, introducing a balance
of the hormonal and reproductive system,
stabilizing adrenal function, increasing
emotional resilience, and
preventing chronic stress. Furthermore,
one should try to understand the possible
emotional and relational triggers of
the disease. Finally, one should support
healthy thyroid performance and proper
metabolism of thyroid hormones by
means of herbal and nutritional medicine.
In some cases accompanying thyroid
tissue atrophy, a lifelong substitution
therapy program is essential. The therapeutic
objective remains the prevention
of deterioration and of other autoimmune
diseases, together with minimizing
adverse symptoms and supporting effective
the use of cell and organ substitution
treatment. The following herbal and nutritional
medicine recommendations do
not replace hormone replacement therapy,
and regular endocrinological treatment
and detailed naturopathic
examinations are strongly recommended.
HERBAL MEDICINE
The relationship between our body and
medicinal plants is a highly intelligent,
two-way communication connection
that can never be equaled by a lifeless
one between human body cells and synthetic
materials. Unlike synthetic drugs,
plant molecules have the ability to intensively
communicate with cells, in order
to establish a relationship with them and
find out what they need.
Our human body is able to take exactly
what and how much it needs from the
plant. In phytotherapy, we call this the
modulating effect, which means that the
body can use or respond to a medicinal
plant in various ways, according to its
specific needs. The immune and hormonal
system responds best to herbs. In
the human body, plant molecules are capable
of transmitting information in the
same way as hormones. They also act as
messengers; they are able to carry specific
cellular messages of organs and tissues to
distant parts of the body.
POSITIVE PLANT USES
The extent to which herbal medicine is
able to treat low thyroid performance is
distinctive and highly dependent on the
stage at which the disease is identified.
Early use of herbal treatment aims to
stimulate the thyroid glands in order to
produce hormones, improve the absorption
of iodine, support thyroid hormone
