A detailed account of early applications of photography to medicine and surgery
was compiled by Alison Gernsheim and published with many illustrations in 1961.
The subject is considered too specialized for inclusion in the present History of Photography,
X-ray Photography. In December 1895 PROFESSOR WILHELM KONRAD RONTGEN
of Wiirzburg University published a paper 'On a new kind of rays', describing his
experiments with the so-called X-rays which penetrate a large number of substances
opaque to ordinary light. Rontgen's discovery was made accidentally during experiments
with a Crookes' vacuum tube contained in a cardboard box. It caused an
enormous sensation, comparable with that aroused by the announcement of the
daguerreotype.
