Many of you may remember Newhey resident Nigel Stott,
fondly known as ‘Mr Newhey’ or ‘Taxi Nigel’, who very sadly
passed away recently. Many local residents have been
asking if there could be a permanent memorial by which to
remember this very popular local character and on page 49,
Councillor Neil Butterworth presents his suggestion and
invites you all to comment on this. Keep your copy of
Streetwise handy throughout the month as the What’s On
Pages are packed with local events taking place in the next
few weeks. This includes a public inquiry into whether a
further 16 massive wind turbines should be built on Scout
Moor, commencing at 10am on 11th October. It will be
very helpful if as many individuals as possible can attend
the first day as this will help to highlight the level of public
concern.
Thanks to all the kind comments we have received over the
Summer about the magazines – it is clear that Streetwise
is well received by local residents and is considered to be
the only community magazine in the area.
Until next month……
STUDENTS SPRUCE UP GARDEN AT STORE
A popular store is looking blooming lovely when customers arrive, thanks to the
efforts of students from Hopwood Hall College.
For after a real community effort, United Carpets and Beds in St Mary’s Way,
Union Street, now boasts new garden planting at the front entrance.
Store franchisee Janis Baklanow and her staff were delighted when Rochdale
in Business came up with the idea of recruiting the students to help.
She said: “We’ve been planning to put in some nice plants at the front of the
store, but we’ve been too busy with our customers to get
round to it.
“The Hopwood Hall students came along and worked really
hard, digging everything over and putting in lots of plants.”
Janis took over the store earlier this year, and she’s finding
a keen market for her flooring and beds among local people
keen to get good value and quality products. She stocks a
wide range of carpets, vinyls, laminates and wood floor,
and beds with mattresses from the British Mattress
company.
Her store is one of almost 60 United Carpets across the
North and Midlands, but she says because she is a
franchisee she’s able to combine the buying power of a
large company – ensuring for good deals - with a friendly
family approach.
“We get a lot of local people through our doors, and
we’ve been excited to see how nice the town looks because
of the Rochdale in Bloom competition,” she said.
“It’s nice that we’ve been able to get the front of the store
looking lovely to match the rest of the town.”
Now that Autumn is on the way, Janis and her staff – who
are renowned in the town for their excellent customer service
- are getting ready for a busy time.
“This is the time of year when people often decide to smarten
up their homes, and we’re expecting lots of customers to come
in for advice and great deals,” she said.
“We’ve years of experience between us, and we’re always
ready to help people make what can be an important purchase
that will enhance their homes for years to come.”
Health Walks
Why not try a favourite walk of the Milnrow Library Walk and Talk Group that encompasses
the beautiful countryside around Milnrow and Newhey.
The Route is simple to follow, just a coat to protect you from any bad weather. A mobile telephone is also
worth carrying.
THE ROUTE
Leaving the Library entrance turn right then right again at the Post Box, along the side passage onto Royds Street; take a left turn
then right at Butterworth Hall past the old Waggon Inn (circa 1782) and follow the Butterworth Hall Brook all the way up Water
Lane. On reaching Moy Hill take the underpass under the M62 motorway. This brings you onto Newfield Head Lane.
Walk up the lane past Newfield Head House until the lane becomes a single track path, which levels off to give a magnificent
panoramic view of Rochdale and Milnrow landscape. On the horizon one can see Scout Moor, Brown Wardle, Middle Hill and
Hades Hill;
Continue along until the path divides;
take the right path over stone setts
Continue along until the path divides; take the right path over stone setts and continue up until the path bends just prior to Rough
Farm. Here there is a stile at the side of a steel gate. Go through the stile and down between fields to another gate with a stile
(Tome Barn).
Continue down this Bridleway. With tree plantations to the right, which emerges at Piethorne Brook, at Woodside with its junction
with Huddersfield Road. Here turn left and go up the road for 50 yards, taking the footpath left back over Piethorne Brook.
Follow this footpath through the wooded glades and along by the Brook with the Piethorne Valley Camping Site over to the right.
You will come across two waterfalls along this path, at the end of which turn right, and then right again along Ogden Lane to its
junction with Huddersfield Road. Look out for a Stone Circle over the wall to your right.
From the
archives
A
From the archives -
James Duckworth
and his grocery stores.
Known throughout the townas Jimmy Ducks, a chain of grocery shops was started by a
man of humble beginnings whose shops provided much service and many good memories
for the people of Rochdale. James Duckworth was born in 1840 near Haslingden, the son
of a poor weaver who found work in Rochdale and whose mother, begging for food, carried
him as a baby over Ashworth Moor. His father died when he was six years old and by
eleven he was working as a half-timer calico weaver for 18 pence a week.
In his early 20’s James wanted to become a Methodist
Minister but as his wife frowned on the idea he settled
for a Town Missionary position in Heywood on a salary
of £60 a year. His health soon broke downhowever, and
on doctor’s advice he took to the outdoor life, selling tea
door-to-door in two and four ounce bags. These sold well
and with increased profits he had enough capital to open
his first shop at 15 Oldham Road in 1868 although
neither he nor his wife knew how to dress a window.
Business prospered and he opened village shopsaround
Rochdale, undercutting town prices by as much as seven
per cent.
Buying a small warehouse in Whitehall Street, Rochdale,
Duckworth began to operate a wholesale trade too, and his
business grew so fast with more shops springing up
throughout the area, that it necessitated a second warehouse
onJohn Street (1878), then a third in Water Street three years
A
later. In 1895, the business became a Limited Company, and
in 1900, the company consolidated premises in a move to a
four-storey warehouse on Oldham Road.
Meanwhile James Duckworthbecame a Rochdale counsellor
in 1887 and held the office of mayor from 1891-1893, again
from 1901-1903 and for a third time 1910-1911. He was
a Magistrate for both Rochdale Borough and Lancashire
County from March 1893 and served both Middleton and
Stockport as a Member of Parliament. In 1908 he was knighted for
his services to Liberalism and to business.
In 1905, James Duckworth, focussing on his political career, retired as chairman and managing director of his
company although retaining his seat on the board. On retirement, he held a party for his workforce at the
Town Hall, announcing a £2,000 benevolent fund for ill or injured employees or for those forced to retire
through old age. James Duckworth died on 1st January 1915, aged 74, leaving six children from his first
marriage and two from his second.
By 1916 there were 387 grocer’s shops in Rochdale, the Pioneers had 49 and James Duckworth had
43,publicising themselves as ‘a shop not far from your house.’ Sir James Duckworth was assisted for many
years in management by his only son, Mr. James Duckworth, J.P. who died suddenly in 1937, the family
continuing to run the company with grandsons Geoffrey, Alan and Roger.
In 1955 Wright's Biscuits Ltd bought the family out but kept the local name. Wrights had a vision in the
1960’s for a super emporium on the land occupied by the Butts Mill at the bottom of Drake Street and although
the plans were enthusiastically approved by the town’s Planning and Buildings Sub-committee, nothing was
built and the brand’s fortunes began to decline.
In 1969, as part of a cost-cutting exercise, the Oldham Road offices and warehouse - for so many years
thecentre of Jimmy Duck’s activities - was closed down, at that time only 17 shops remaining under the
Duckworth name. The last traces of a once-great grocery name in Rochdale disappeared in 1975 when the
Oldham Road premises were demolished.
If you have any memories of James Duckworth Ltd., I’d be delighted to hear from you and add
them to a growing Rochdale archive on the subject. Please contact Gary Heywood-Everett at
HORSE RIDING FOR
THE DISABLED
Birtle and Rochdale RSN are a small charity that provides horse riding for disabled children
and adults in Bury and Rochdale areas.
Horse riding is beneficial to individuals with various physical, mental and behavioural
issues as well as learning difficulties. These benefits are many and varied. They include
the physical benefits of using muscle groups that may not normally be used, which helps
with the overall body strength and in some cases posture. Some of our riders are on the
Autistic spectrum and their parents and carers often report a marked improvement in
their communication and general outlook before and after their riding sessions. We also
believe that they can develop life skills such as self confidence, responsibility, team
work, ability to listen and respond to general instruction and to show discipline, all of
which can have a positive effect on their general life.
Overall we aim to provide a fun and educational experience in a safe environment. The
only stipulation we have is that all our riders are under ten and a half stone.
We currently have vacancies on our
Wednesday evening and Saturday
afternoon sessions.
If you would like more information or
perhaps would like to come down and
watch a session please contact us on
any of the following numbers. Birtle
We’re Making Plans for Nigel!
Neil Butterworth in Brenda’s Garden Sadly, we recently lost Mr. Newhey, Taxi Nigel/ Newhey Nigel, as he was
known to most of the people of Newhey. When a local lad such as Nigel
suddenly disappears there is a big hole left in our community. He touched
many people’s lives in an extremely positive way, always courteous, good
humoured and gentlemanly. Spontaneous flowers appeared at the site of
Newhey Cars following his untimely death, and there was standing room
only outside at his Funeral on the 9th September.
There have been collections around the village in the pubs and shops and a number of
people have asked me if there could be a more permanent memorial, perhaps a bench
located in Brenda’s Garden? These initiatives are really brilliant, but I think we can do even better than that, what about turning
the open land adjacent to the school, Oak Street and Newhey Road into “The Nigel Stott Memorial Gardens”. This surely would
be a fitting memorial to Mr. Newhey, and we could place a variety of items into the gardens, which would act as a more long
lasting celebration of his life, perhaps incorporating benches that have been purchased by the various collections above. I have
made initial enquiries into the use of the land for this purpose and have received positive responses, but please let me know what
you think of this idea. Please stop me as I walk around the Villages, Telephone me on 07771 861196, via Email:
neil.butterwoth@rochdale.gov.uk or visits me at my next Advice Surgery at Butterworth Hall on Friday October 7th at 6pm.
CRIME PREVENTION TIPS/ADVICE – MESSAGE FROM YOUR LOCAL POLICE FORCE
DARK NIGHTS
With the dark nights getting longer it is important to keep your home secure.
Keeping your home secure can be easily done. Here are a few tips in how you
do that:
Always lock your doors even when you are inside
Set alarms when leaving the home
Never leave a spare key outside the house
Set up or join a Home Watch scheme in your neighbourhood
Keep valuables out of view
BONFIRE NIGHT
Bonfire night can be spectacular with amazing public displays or enjoyed with
something smaller in private at home.
It is important to keep safe and to be considerate of others. One way this can
be done is by adhering to the curfew which is 1am on bonfire night but is
otherwise generally 7am-11pm. This prevents disruption to others with loud
noises and bright lights.
It is also important to note that fireworks can only be purchased and used by
persons who are 18 and over. And that all fireworks are used responsibly and
for their intended purposes indicated on the packaging.
HALLOWEEN – HOW TO HAVE FUN BUT BE SAFE
Halloween is a night when everyone can have great fun with friends and
family. However as it is dark it is very important to be safe and also
considerate of the people around you when trick or treating.
One way of keeping safe is making sure that children are always accompanied
by an adult. In addition it is important that they do not approach strangers
and only knock on the doors of people they know. As it is very dark, visibility
is vital and bright clothes should be worn, and road safety should be adhered
to.
Another thing to be wary of is keeping tricks safe
and fun. It is important to remember that any
damage caused to property is a crime.
DEFROSTING CARS
Protect your frost covered vehicles from
opportunist thieves. We would like to remind
motorists not to leave their vehicles with the
keys in the ignition while the vehicles defrost.
Thieves are known to target residential
areas on cold and frosty mornings
looking for cars where the
owner has started the
engine to defrost the
windscreen and then
returned inside, leaving
the car unattended.
THIS IS A SCAM - DON'T FALL FOR IT
Thankfully he didn't and contacted us instead.
A DATE FOR YOUR DIARY - START OF PUBLIC
INQUIRY FOR SCOUT MOOR WINDFARM EXTENSION
The Public Inquiry into whether a further 16 massive wind turbines
should be built on Scout Moor will commence at 10.00am on Tuesday
11th October 2016 at;
The Council Chamber
Rossendale Borough Council
Futures Park
Bacup
OL13 0BB.
A number of individuals and groups will be speaking at the Inquiry on
matters of concern to all the communities affected by this proposal.
It would be helpful if as many concerned people attended the Inquiry
(particularly on the first day) as this will impress on the Inspector the
level of concern in all affected communities.
Wind Turbines planned for Scout
Moor threaten to ruin the area
around Waughs Well
Waughs Well is set in a lovely location nestled in the Rossendale hillsides above Edenfield with extensive views
looking down Dearden Clough or " Plunge " as it is known to locals and across to Holcombe Tower and beyond.
The well was built as far back as 1866 to commemorate the Lancashire dialect poet Edwin Waugh who visited the
area many times to write his tales, verse and poetry.
The large wooden cross on Whittle Pike was raised in memory of Flying officer Geoffrey Molyneux who died whilst on a flying
The Edwin Waugh Society meet annually at the well where guest speakers read poem and verse from Waughs many works.
exercise over the Irish Sea on January the 11th 1955 aboard Shackelton WL743.
The historic monument can easily be accessed from Owd Betts, from Edenfield
On the 25th June, a walk was organised by local people and community groups in protest against Peels plans to develop the area
via Gincroft Lane, from Rochdale starting at Catley Lane Head and following
around Waughs Well with more huge turbines.
the superb cobbled Rooley Moor Road and then through Cragg quarries or
from Waterfoot in Rossendale by taking the Pennine Bridleway National
The plan was for walkers to set off from various points with a view to
Trail.
meeting at the monument at noon. The majority of walkers chose the
shortest, and perhaps the steepest route starting from Waterfoot in
At the ruins of the nearby Foe Edge farm there is a useful information
Rossendale and following the Pennine Bridleway, also know on this
board outlining details of Waughs connection with the area. The farm at
section as the Mary Towneley Loop named after the Bridleways activist
Foe Edge was demolished by North West Water in the mid 70s.
Lady Mary Towneley.
Several people chose to come along on horses and several came on
Waughs well is a much loved heritage asset to the area and is a
Mountainbikes adding to the gathering of
popular visitor attraction to both local people and many visitors from
eventually close to 150 people.
further afield. Given its location it's a place of peace and tranquility in
The weather was just about perfect for the walk and
a busy word and a place for quiet contemplation far removed from the
everyone enjoyed the experience of the walk and
stresses and strains of everyday life.
meeting together in quiet collective protest.
All of that may be set to change as Peel Holdings, who were
The plans by Peel have been "Called in" by the
responsible for the development of the nearby Scout Moor Windfarm
Planning Inspectorate which means that the decision
(the biggest in England) have submitted plans to add a further 16
will be decided by Public Enquiry in October of this
even bigger turbines to the Scout Moor site, most of them in the
year. Hopefully the Inspector will take careful note of
area around Waughs Well.
the many objections by local people and community
groups and refuse the planning application so that
Two of the proposed turbines will be situated only metres away from the historic monument,
