f<strong>in</strong>ancial services providers are more likely to target relatively wealthier areas,<br />

which would ensure a higher volume of activity and greater profits.<br />

Figure 8 shows <strong>the</strong> relationship between F<strong>in</strong>Access survey respondents’ level<br />

of <strong>in</strong>come from <strong>the</strong>ir primary source (expressed <strong>in</strong> log) and <strong>the</strong> distance from<br />

<strong>the</strong>ir place of residency to <strong>the</strong> closest f<strong>in</strong>ancial services provider (expressed<br />

<strong>in</strong> kilometres). Each dot represents one respondent. It is important to note<br />

that previous studies focus<strong>in</strong>g on <strong>the</strong> <strong>in</strong>comes of Kenyan households have<br />

highlighted that <strong>the</strong>y often derive from multiple sources, and are highly subject<br />

to volatility. 16 Thus, <strong>the</strong> relationship displayed <strong>in</strong> Figure 8 may not be exhaustive<br />

<strong>in</strong> expla<strong>in</strong><strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong> diversity of <strong>in</strong>comes an average household may receive (which<br />

is strongly related to <strong>in</strong>dividual f<strong>in</strong>ancial management capability).<br />

Yet, <strong>the</strong> result is suggestive of a negative relationship between <strong>the</strong> distance to<br />

a f<strong>in</strong>ancial services provider and <strong>the</strong> <strong>in</strong>dividual level of <strong>in</strong>come. Individuals<br />

who live closer to a f<strong>in</strong>ancial services provider are more likely to report a<br />

higher level of <strong>in</strong>come.<br />

In order to corroborate this f<strong>in</strong>d<strong>in</strong>g, we study <strong>the</strong> relationship between<br />

respondents’ proximity to a f<strong>in</strong>ancial services provider and <strong>the</strong>ir level of wealth.<br />

The wealth <strong>in</strong>dex considers a wide range of measures (<strong>in</strong>clud<strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong> type of<br />
