David Austin Rose ‘Wollerton
Old Hall’
The plant: I’m a big fan of David Austin roses, which combine the charm
and perfume of old roses with the colour range and repeat flowering
of modern types. So I’m always excited when a new variety hits the
Australian market. ‘Wollerton Old Hall’ is an absolute gem with plump
buds that are blushed with red and stunning soft-apricot chalice-shaped
blooms that fade to cream. It repeat flowers from spring right through
to autumn and it’s up there among the most fragrant David Austin
blooms (which says a lot!). The plant itself is good-looking, too, and
forms a bushy, upright-growing shrub to around 1.6m tall (though in my
experience often taller in Australian conditions).
Growing: Grow ‘Wollerton Old Hall’ in a sunny spot with good drainage
and prepare beds well with compost and organic matter before
planting. Feed plants regularly throughout the growing season to
promote an abundance of highly scented blooms.

Tomato ‘Sunrise Bumble Bee’
The plant: There’s talk that ‘Sunrise Bumble Bee’ and its relatives from the
Artisan series of tomatoes are the next big thing in the heirloom tomato world.
I haven’t tasted one yet but, if the description is anything to go by, this is a
variety well worth trying in the garden. It’s reputed to be as sweet as ‘Tommy
Toe’ and even more striking than ‘Tigerella’ and, if you’ve ever grown either of
these stunning varieties, you’ll know that’s a recommendation in itself.
Growing: Sow tomato seed in spring after the risk of frost has passed.
Tomatoes enjoy a sunny spot with good drainage so prepare the soil with
compost before planting. If your soil is too acidic, add lime or dolomite.
‘Sunrise Bumble Bee’ will require staking.
Design: ‘Sunrise Bumble Bee’ boasts a bumper crop of cherry-style
tomatoes with decorative swirls of red and orange. The fruit is marbled on
the inside, too, so enjoy their sweet, tangy flavour straight from the bush
or use them as the centrepiece in a colourful heirloom tomato salad or
