Feeding for growth | WEEKEND GARDENING
Applying liquid fertilisers on a fortnightly or
monthly basis is quite common, but other
critical times where plants benefit from liquid
fertiliser applications can be at planting, after
flowering and/or during fruit set as well as
during periods of drought.
Seaweed: Seaweed is more of a plant tonic.
It doesn’t have a very high percentage
of all the nutrients but it does have the
capacity to encourage soil microbes and
fungi to work in with plant feeder roots.
This means that plants in the presence of
seaweed can take up nutrients and water
more efficiently, are more drought- and
disease-resistant and even more tolerant of
temperature fluctuations and extremes.
Fish emulsion: This is made up of fish
waste byproducts and is a valuable,
nutrient-rich liquid fertiliser. With plants

Liquid fertilisers are a great option not only for giving plants a
fertilising boost but for the ease in applying a foliar feed. Plants can
take up liquid fertilising very quickly when applied to the foliage. It’s
best to do this either early in the morning or late in the afternoon
