They have since planted 100 truffleinoculated
oak trees in the soil-amended
space. “The truffles are in their second
growing season and it will be a few more
years before we know if they have been
successful. It’s an experiment.”
Now with space to spare, Kay and Mark
have allowed their vegetable garden to
sprawl over both blocks, so there’s plenty of
extra produce to swap and share. They grow
Corella and Paradise pears, olives, walnuts,
Armenian cucumbers, oxheart tomatoes and
white mulberries, with a pomegranate orchard
on the way.
Their garden is grown in mulch and
fertilised with local horse manure and
compost, which includes coffee grounds from
the local cafe. “Our garden is a labour of love.
We enjoy the time spent in it and are not
trying to cut corners. We want to produce the
healthiest fruit and vegetables we can, for
ourselves and the rest of the family,” says Kay.
