60 Science & Technology AlsoEnergy’s PowerTrack monitoring system. While working with customers in its home state of Colorado, AlsoEnergy discovered a need for monitoring software that can maximize efficiency, and optimize resource allocation in commer- cial PV systems. In September, AlsoEner- gy introduced a product and service package built around its PowerTrack Solar PV monitor and PowerLobby Display. AlsoEnergy says the new PowerTrack software can detect problems in a PV in- stallation. The system measures irradiation Direct Grid Technologies, based near New York City, is introducing a new micro-inverter line especially designed for thin-film modules. The company, a wholly-owned subsidiary that spun off from utility supplier Island Technology in September, is banking on a patent- pending technology that »significant- ly increases reliability and efficiency,« says the product datasheet. The product, called the Direct Grid’s »Smart«- Series micro-inverter, is available in two models with outputs of 200 and 300 W. It measures system yield using data from the inverter, or a separate meter, or both. Then, the monitoring system uploads this data every minute, as well as sends email or text message alerts if the PV system operates outside of preset parameters. The software’s performance depends on the input data: if the data comes from a high quality pyra- nometer and a separate meter, then the system should work quite well. The Smart-Series micro-inverters accept DC voltage inputs ranging from 150 to 188 V with a maximum of 190 V. AC output voltages range from 100 to 135 V. Enclosed in an alumi- num alloy case, the product weighs 2.75 lbs and stands 1.1 inches tall. San Jose, California-based eIQ Energy released its new power optimizers, named Parallux. The name pays homage to the idea that wiring panels in paral- lel allows them to work independently of one another, and boosts overall power to the inverter. The Parallux vBoost does this by connecting to a DC power bus set at an optimal voltage for inverter efficiency. A tracker in the vBoost sets the MPP level for each module before fee- ding the electricity into a DC-DC con- verter, which boosts the voltage to match that of the bus. The constant-voltage bus, which allows more high-voltage modules in a string, should mean fewer combiner boxes and less cabling. And the higher voltage of the DC bus should deliver power more effi- ciently to the inverter. With so much of the power conversion mechanism trans- subsidiary of the Ame- A rican chemical company DuPont is getting into the module business. That may displease DuPont customers who purchase Tedlar, the polyvinyl fluoride product used as backsheets for solar panels. DuPont Apollo Ltd., the Hong Kong subsidiary that produces the new modules, isn’t interested in being diplomatic – in fact, the company’s stated goal is to become one of the world’s top three thin-film PV pro- ducers by 2015. eIQ Energy, Inc.: Stand 2666 Panel wiring with Parallux vBoost The »vBoost module maximizer« is designed to connect to any DC source within its voltage input range, deliver- ing a constant 300-range voltage to the DC bus ferred to the panel level, the eIQ product should make for a less complex, may be cheaper inverter. eIQ co-founder Gene Krzywinski says the patent-pending technology for the boost box is comparatively cheap to produce and reliable. eIQ offers two vBoost maximizers, the 250 for lower voltage DuPont Apollo Ltd.: Stand 1564 Du Pont’s A1 Series (left) and B1 Series modules. In the fourth quarter, it will add three modules to the ises high system voltage, which makes it a better choice for large-scale applica- tions such as solar farms, says DuPont Apollo. Partially transparent, both module series are suitable for BIPV ap- plications, such as canopies and curtain walls. DuPont Apollo says its A1 Series is a good fit for rooftop installa- tions since at 20 kg it weighs less than the 28.5 kg B1 Se- ries module.
